You may not have heard of Britney Spears, Winona Ryder or Lindsay Lohan.

Even the rich and famous can succumb to this compulsion.

These celebrities have all been caught, accused or even boasted about taking the five-finger price cut.

1. Lindsay Lohan

In 2011, Lindsay Lohan went through a tough time, which included being caught shoplifting. She was caught on camera stealing $2,500 from a Venice Beach jewelry store. She was spotted wearing her stolen jewelry in the days following.

Lindsay was eventually brought to court, where she received a sentence of 480 hours community service, and 120 days in prison, which she completed at home because the jails were overcrowded. She also had to complete psychological counseling and a shoplifters' alternative course.

2. Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder, a Hollywood actress who was arrested for shoplifting and walking out of Saks Fifth Avenue with $5,000 in merchandise in Beverly Hills in 2001. She was taken to jail, but later released after posting a $20,000 bond. She was charged with felony theft of goods and possession without prescription of pharmaceutical drugs.

She was forced to pay over $10,000 in fines and 480 hours community service the following year. She was not sentenced to jail, but she was warned she could be put in prison if she did it again. Winona stepped away from acting after the incident.

3. Megan Fox

Megan Fox, a teenage girl, was caught shoplifting at Walmart when she tried to steal cosmetics from Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen. She was given some unusual punishments when she appeared in court.

"They took me to court and gave me two options. I chose the second option, which involved wrapping Christmas gifts, which I thought was great, but it wasn't a real punishment. She told Express that the other option was to make her wear a sign saying she stole from Walmart, and stand in front of Walmart for 3 days.

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer has admitted that she was an avid shoplifter when she was younger. She estimates that between the ages 14 and 21 she stole more than $100,000 in merchandise. She says she began small but it grew into "grand larceny," in college.

She told GQ, "I discovered a department store where I could take anything and return it for cash - no tags, receipts, nothing." "You know, thousands and thousands of dollars." It was thrilling. The adrenaline was thrilling. The money was nice, but it wasn't the main reason. It didn't bother me. This huge corporation. You know I've never stolen from anyone. "I never stole from the little store."

Amy's shoplifting habit was officially over when she was caught in Bloomingdales, and taken to court.

5. Kim Richards

Kim Richards, star of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills", was caught in 2015 stealing from Target. Kim Richards was arrested for stealing $600 of merchandise. She was released on $5,000 bail, but later sentenced to probation for 36 months, 300 hours of community service, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. She was also barred from Target, where she was arrested.

6. Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes, who has been struggling with personal issues, was allegedly caught shoplifting at a Barneys in New York City. Amanda was allegedly caught leaving the store with a $200 hat that she had not paid for. Amanda signed a waiver of trespass after she returned the hat. She also agreed to never go back to the shop.

An official from the NYPD told People that "Police responded to [petty theft]." "Amanda Bynes put a hat over her head and left." The security brought her in and called the cops, but they decided to let her go. She was gone by the time the NYPD arrived.

Britney Spear

Britney Spears was accused of shoplifting from a Los Angeles store in 2007. Britney Spears was shopping at Hustlers, when she tried on a pair underwear. She was told that she couldn't try on the underwear in the dressing room, so she tried them on outside the store. Britney was told to buy the underwear. She did so, but allegedly took a wig from a mannequin on her way out.

She was photographed later that same year allegedly stealing from a gas-station store.

James Franco

James Franco, then a teenager at the time, began shoplifting and made money out of it. James Franco says that he stole cologne and sold it from their school lockers. The two were eventually caught and reported to the authorities.

By the time I reached high school, I had no 'thing'. I just ended up getting in a lot more trouble. In 8th grade, we began stealing cologne. He said that we had thirty bottles of cologne in each locker at school. We could then sell the cologne to our friends at dances.

9. Kristin Cavallari

Kristin Cavallari was allegedly caught shoplifting before she became famous on "Laguna Beach." Tawny kitaen, an actress and shopowner, claims that Kristin Cavallari and her friends were arrested for stealing from her store. She didn't press charges but was surprised when Kristin appeared on TV a few days later.

I called the police and when they returned, the girls had pants, tops, and underwear. Then they take them all to jail handcuffed. I don't file charges. Two weeks ago there was a picture with Jessica and Kristin, from Laguna Beach on either side. My daughter said, "Oh my god." She stole from your shop? She said, "And now she's this huge thing."

10. Stephanie Pratt

Stephanie Pratt, a former model from Hawaii, was arrested in 2006 for shoplifting at a Neiman-Marcus store. The "Hills" star was arrested and taken to jail for stealing over $1,300 in merchandise. Stephanie was later released after posting $5,000 bail. She claimed that she had been under the influence prescription drugs. She was sentenced to probation for three years and charged with theft in the second degree.
