"His entire leg was covered with like splotchy purply, red, almost as if he had bruises."
A Florida 11-year old boy is now dead after a twisted ankle caused a flesh-eating infection that eventually killed him.
Fox 35 was told by Jesse Brown's relatives that Jesse Brown, her fifth grader, had broken his ankle while running on a treadmill. A few days later, his "whole leg" was covered in splotchy, purply and red almost like bruises.
He was diagnosed with group-a streptococcal disease. According to the CDC, group A Step, the same bacteria that causes strep throat, can infect parts of the body that are normally free from germs, causing severe illness, sometimes even death.
Jesse's condition worsened, and in a matter of days the infection became a flesh-eating bacteria that caused his brain to swell fatally. Megan, his cousin, stated that doctors advised the family that Jesse had rolled his ankle and that the infection was likely to have spread there. Because it was already weak.
She added, "This to kill him in a matter of days is crazy." "If we had more awareness, we might have caught it sooner when we noticed that he had a fever."
The CDC says they are investigating an increase in group A strep infections among children in the United States following low levels during the pandemic.
Megan described her cousin Jesse as a "miracle child" on a GoFundMe page to pay for his memorial service and hospital bills. Megan said that Jesse was a "miracle child" who was born after his parents tried for ten years to have a baby. She wrote, "That miracle was taken away from us too quickly."
Jesse, only 11 years old, was a happy, healthy boy who was bound for great things. He was passionate about dirt bike racing, and also took part in Muay Thai. By the age of three, he was already racing BMX bikes. She wrote that Jesse was loved by everyone who met him. He was funny, contagious and lit up the room. Betsy and Brad gave everything to their son. He was the center of their lives. He was spoilt rotten but he loved their miracle baby. We are grateful to everyone. We love you Jesse."
His school also held a fundraiser. Jesse said that he worked hard and had a big heart.
"Everyone who knew Jesse had nothing but love for his," they said, adding, "Jesse will always be in our hearts, but will be greatly missed in so many ways."
