13 Celebrities Who Have Dealt With Lyme Disease

Many A-listers, including Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber and Alec Baldwin's uncle Bella Hadid, suffer from this condition.

Every year, Lyme disease affects hundreds of thousands but is often misunderstood.

Unfortunately, the tick-borne illness is often misdiagnosed. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, including body pains and severe headaches. Many sufferers spend months, or even years, trying to diagnose the cause of their symptoms. Lyme disease can have long-lasting effects if it is not treated.

Many celebrities have shared their experiences with Lyme Disease. Avril lavigne and Bella Hadid have both spoken out to help others.

1. Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid is not new to talking about Lyme disease. She has been very open and honest in her struggle with the illness. Bella Hadid spoke about her battle with Lyme disease in 2016. She talked about how she lost the ability to ride a horse because of it and spent days not wanting get out of bed.

Bella's life changed in 2023. Bella, who had been battling Lyme disease for 15 years, finally found a treatment for it that worked. She said she felt healthy for the very first time since years.

She shared her story on Instagram. "Living in this state and watching it worsen with time, while working to make my family, and those who support me proud, took a toll on myself in ways I cannot explain. To be that sad and sick with the most blessings/privilege/opportunity/love around me was quite possibly the most confusing thing ever."

She added, "I feel so grateful for life and have such a new perspective. This 100+ days of Lyme disease, chronic illness, [co-infection] treatments, almost 15 years invisible suffering was all worth it, if, God willing, I can spread love and be myself from a full glass, for the first time in my life."

2. Yolanda Hadid

Bella's mom Yolanda Hadid suffered from Lyme disease as well. Bella Hadid was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012. She traveled the world to find a treatment. Some of her journey was documented by "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills".

In a 2015 speech, she stated, "I don't even have the right words to describe the darkness, pain and unknown hell that I've experienced these past years." "I didn't live. I was confined to my paralyzed mind. The disease has made me weak. On many nights, I have wished to die. "I pray to wash away in heaven where there is no pain."

Yolanda said that in 2021 she was "in remission" and felt better than she had in a very long time.

3. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber announced in early 2020 that he was diagnosed with Lyme Disease after suffering from health problems for many years. In an Instagram posting, Justin Bieber explained that many people believed he had been on drugs but he actually was dealing with Lyme disease and a serious case chronic mono which affected his "skin" as well as brain function, energy, and overall health.

Justin wrote: "It has been a tough couple of years, but I am confident that with the right treatment to treat this incurable illness and me being back better than ever will make it all worthwhile."

Justin was diagnosed in 2021 with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a condition that causes partial facial paralysis. He decided to delay his tour for several months to focus on his own health.

4. Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber's wife, revealed that she too had Lyme disease. She did not elaborate on her experience but stressed the importance of addressing health concerns.

"Lyme is a fascinating thing, because many people do not believe it to be real and others think it's BS. She said, "I've dealt it with before. I've also had it." On the Women's Health UK Podcast "Going for Goal," she added, "My husband is a sufferer and has to deal with it deeply." It's important to find doctors who are committed to finding out the root cause of your health problems.

5. Avril Lavigne

Avril was forced to step away from the limelight for many years due to Lyme disease. She struggled with symptoms for months after being bitten in 2014 by a tick. Avril was "in bed for f---king two years" when it was discovered that she had Lyme Disease.

She told Billboard, "I accepted that I would die." "I felt like I was drowning and trying to get air in that moment. "God help me keep my face above the water?" I said under my breath.

Avril was inspired by that moment to write "Head Above Water," releasing it after a two-year break. She advocates for those with the disease, and raises money through the Avril Lavigne Foundation.

6. Riley Keough

Riley Keough revealed in 2023 that she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. She didn't elaborate on how the disease had affected her but she did say that it was a reason she chose surrogacy for her daughter. Riley said that she checked into a holistic Swedish treatment center during a break from acting to help with her symptoms.

She told Vanity Fair, "I have Lyme Disease." "I came here during this short break to see if it would help." It's an holistic treatment center that offers many things you can't do in America, such as cleaning your blood.

7. Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer was first diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2020. In an Instagram posting, she revealed she was receiving treatment for the disease but may have had it for years prior to being diagnosed.

She wrote to her fans, "I've probably had it for years." "Any advice? "I know to avoid the sun. I also take these herbs called lyme-2 from Cape Cod. Please text or comment on my number. "I also want to mention that I feel great and am excited about getting rid of it."

8. Shania Twain

Shania Twain was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2003, after being bitten by a tick on horseback. It took her seven years to figure out the reason why her voice was changing and fading. Shania was diagnosed with dysphonia - a vocal cord disorder caused by Lyme disease.

"My symptoms were frightening because I was dizzy on stage before I was diagnosed. I was dizzy and losing my balance. I thought I might fall off the stage. She said, "I was experiencing these very, extremely, millisecond blackouts but regularly every minute or 30 seconds," in her documentary "Shania Twain, Not Just a Girl." She added that she thought her voice had been lost "forever."

After two open-throat surgery and physical therapy, Shania regained her voice. She has since released a new album and begun a Las Vegas residency.

9. Ramona Singer

Ramona singer, the "Real Housewife", revealed in March 2020 that she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. She said that the disease was caught early, and she received treatment immediately.

She told E! News, "You should get tested at least once a year if you live in an area with deer." News. "But we caught it early, and I was very fortunate and very blessed."

10. Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller revealed in 2010 that he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and had been battling it for years. He said he had no symptoms at the time but that Lyme never leaves your system.

He told The Hollywood Reporter that he contracted the disease in Nantucket (Mass.) a few years ago. "My knee was inflamed, and the doctors couldn't determine what was wrong. Kelly Osbourne was diagnosed with Lyme disease years before receiving a proper diagnosis. In 2004, Kelly Osbourne was bitten with a tick in the backyard of her family at a reindeer sanctuary. She started to feel symptoms, but doctors continued prescribing medication - even though she suspected that she had Lyme disease. She was not tested for Lyme until she visited an alternative medicine specialist. In Germany, she received stem cell therapy.

The doctors changed my prescription over and over again, trying to find the right dosage. It turned me into a walking zombie. In movies, you see a patient with mental illness sitting in a rocking-chair in a nightgown and cardigan staring at a wall. She wrote, "That was me," in her book There Is No F*cking Secrecy: Letters from a Badass Bich.

She said, "I entered my symptoms in online quizzes and the results always came back as Lyme disease. I was tested. I was diagnosed with stage III neurological Lyme. "I was relieved that I finally knew what was happening, but also scared s---tless."

12. Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo announced in 2017 that he was suffering from Lyme disease and warned others of the approaching tick season. Mark Ruffalo hasn't revealed much about his Lyme disease treatment. However, he encouraged his followers to watch "The Quiet Epidemic", a documentary he described as a powerful "expose on the hidden epidemic and for-profit healthcare industry of Lyme Disease."

Mark wrote: "I have personal experience that Lyme disease is brutal, persistent and often misdiagnosed. Mark writes that the healthcare industry has been lagging behind in its understanding of this disease.

13. Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin revealed his Lyme Disease diagnosis in 2011 but did not mention it for several years. In 2017, he revealed that he was bitten by ticks twice nearly 20 years earlier. He said that he started to feel debilitating and thought at one point that he would die.

Alec, who attended the Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s LymeAid Benefit, shared that he had experienced the classic Lyme Disease symptoms for the past five years. These included black lung, flu like symptoms and sweating in bed.

He said, "The first round was the worst, and then it diminished. At least, that's what I perceived." I thought I was going to die. I was single, not married, and divorced from my previous wife. "I was lying in my bed, saying 'I am going to die from Lyme disease' and 'I don't want to be here too long'."

Alec says that now that he is feeling better, he will be very vigilant to ensure his children do not get bitten by ticks.
