13 Celebrity Memoirs From This Year You Need To Read

"Gay didn’t feel right and neither did straight. Alien may be the best match

While celebrities are reluctant to share their intimate lives, some stars are more willing to do so when writing a memoir.

Many celebrities wrote their stories over the course of 2022. Famous faces such as Matthew Perry and Tom Felton published their memoirs this year. They revealed some shocking truths.

The actors were not the only ones to spill the beans about their lives. Jamie Lynn Spears and Jennette McCurdy were just a few of the others who pulled back the curtain.

1. Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry's shocking memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing" reveals all. He also discusses his struggles with addiction that began when he was 24, after being cast as Chandler Bing on "Friends." Mathew recounts his long and difficult journey. He admits that he once weighed 128 pounds and was using 55 Vicodin per day. Mathew said that he spent $7 million to $9 Million in 15 rehabs while trying to get sober over the years. Matthew failed to quit drinking and using other drugs despite his best efforts. His heart stopped for five minutes before he was admitted to the operating room. Matthew was able to recover and has been sober for many years.

"I wanted to share it when I was safe from getting into the dark side again. To write it down, I had to wait until my alcoholism and addiction was gone. Matthew said that the most important thing was that I was certain it would help others.

2. Jamie Lynn Spears

Jamie Lynn Spears' memoir, "Things That I Should have Said", was released in January. It caused quite a bit of drama within her family. Jamie Lynn discusses her relationship with Britney over the years and touches on her mental health struggles. Jamie Lynn described Britney's behavior as "erratic", paranoid, and spiraling" at one point. Britney called Jamie Lynn out for using Britney for sales purposes while she was busy promoting the book. Britney said that her family was "disgusted."

Jamie Lynn opens up about her childhood as a Nickelodeon child star, her mental health journey and becoming a mom to teenagers. She also discusses how Maddie's near death experience impacted her life.

3. Tom Felton

Tom Felton shared his personal life with fans in "Beyond the Wand": His memoir, "The Magic and Mayhem Of Growing Up a Wizard". Tom was candid about his struggle with addiction and his multiple trips to rehab. He also shared his feelings about Emma Watson. Tom admits that there were times when Tom saw Emma Watson as more than just a friend, despite the things he had publicly stated about their friendship.

"Rumors began to abound about the fact that there was more to our marriage than we were letting on. He wrote that although I had denied that I loved her in this way, the truth was quite different. "My girlfriend knew immediately that there was something between us. I can recall using the old line "I love her like my sister." There was more to it. Although I don't believe I was ever in love, Emma was someone I loved and respected. We were like friends, and I know Emma will always have my back.

4. Jennette McCurdy

Jennette McCurdy published her memoir, "I'm glad my mom died" in 2013. It chronicles her childhood as a Nickelodeon star as well her turbulent relationship to her mother. Jennette McCurdy reflects on the severe physical and emotional abuse her mother caused her. She died in 2013. One story about Bill Murray was the most popular after the book's release. Geena, a Geena who worked with Bill in 1990's "Quick Change," said that she had a very negative experience with him. She claimed that he made Geena uncomfortable at her audition in his hotel, and verbally degraded him on set in front hundreds of people. She claims she hasn’t spoken to him in the years since the film was released.

"I think it's pretty well known that he can be difficult to work alongside. So I don't feel I'm trying to shock him. Geena shared her experience with People. "I think he knows very well how he can behave," she said.

6. Constance Wu

Constance Wu announced her memoir "Making A Scene" on social media in 2015. Although she acknowledges that the collection of essays is not always flattering, she is proud of how sincere she was in helping others. She also shared her honest reflections about the time she was sexually assaulted.

"Why I wrote my novel and why I am here today [is] because I want to reach out to help people talk through the difficult stuff to understand it, deal with it, and find ways to heal. We must let all parts of ourselves be visible, even those we are afraid or embarrassed of. These parts, as well as any imperfections, need care and attention. Constance said that we must stop beating ourselves up and each other when we do.

7. Jonathan Van Ness

Jonathan Van Ness, the "Queer Eye” star, released his memoir "Over The Top" in September. It details his life before he joined the show’s cast. Jonathan explored the reasons he decided to disclose his HIV status. He also shared his drug abuse history, including how he became addicted and had to go to rehab twice in his 20s. Jonathan said that he wanted to help others when he wrote the book.

8. Chrishell Stause

Chrishell Stause, the "Selling Sunset” star, opened up in her memoir "Under Construction": Because Living my best life took a little work. Chrishell was open about her childhood in Kentucky, how she got to the top and what it took to make it happen. She also shared details about her relationship with famous men and her failed relationships. Chrishell admits that she is still learning and improving her life. She says therapy and self-reflection have helped her make better choices in love and relationships.

9. Viola Davis

Viola Davis shared her memoir, "Finding Me," in April. It chronicled her journey from poverty to New York City and how she found her purpose. Viola spoke out about the impact childhood trauma had on her daily life in a particularly moving moment of the book. Will asked Viola a profound question and she said she was still the "terrified third-grade Black girl" who had been subject to racist abuses.

"There I was, a working actor with steady gigs and Broadway credits. Multiple industry awards were won and I had a reputation for bringing professionalism to every project. Oprah even knew my identity. Viola wrote about the life-changing realization while conversing with Will Smith.

10. Anne Heche

Anne Heche was writing a follow up memoir to "Call Me Crazy," 2001, before she died earlier this year. The book was published shortly after Anne Heche's unexpected death. The book contained personal stories and poems that encouraged Anne through difficult times. Anne shared her struggles with sexual abuse as a child, her faith and her relationships with Ellen DeGeneres in the stories.

"I had never been with any woman before I met Ellen. Personally, I didn't identify as a lesbian. I just fell in love. To be honest, it was as strange to me as any other person. It was hard to put into words how I felt. Gay and straight didn't feel right. Sometimes I thought Alien might be the right fit. What, why, or how I fell in love, I would love to tell you if someone had asked. But, as I stated earlier, nobody ever did. Anne wrote that she was happy to be able tell you the truth in this book.

11. Selma Blair

Selma Blair published her memoir, "Mean Baby, A Memoir Of Growing Up" in May. It details her life from childhood through her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. Selma shared her story about addiction, a alleged sexual assault, and a surprising connection with Drew Barrymore in this candid account. Although the subjects may have been difficult to recall, Selma said that the memoir was written for her son and for anyone who is trying to find the most painful place to hide until they get over their pain. Selma believes she is in a good place now, but she still struggles to believe that "all this" happened in her life.

12. Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa reflected on her life in "Live Wire": Long-Winded Short Stories, her memoir. She shared everything, from her pivotal career moments to her time blacking out during sex. Kelly says that while there are many lighthearted stories to tell, the most difficult chapter was the one about "Live!" Regis Philbin, Kelly's co-host. Kelly spoke out about her early days on the show and claimed Regis was not immediately welcoming. She believes that she eventually came to trust Regis, but they had their ups as well. She shared that she enjoyed all the time they had together, and she also said she was grateful for their "handful of times off-set." She called him "the best storyteller in the world," and said that if she could be ten times as good as he, she would "be happy."

13. Colton Haynes

Colton Haynes' memoir, "Miss Memory Lane," was released in May. It featured his incredible career highlights and heartbreaking lows. The actor spoke out about his childhood and his struggles with sexuality. Colton also revealed the truth about his exit from "Teen Wolf," and "Arrow." Colton shares his story about how he came to sobriety through the use of drugs and alcohol. He was hospitalized after his last blunder, which changed his life.

He wrote, "After a week in Cedars, I couldn't even walk." "I was told by a doctor that I had taken a very high dose of Xanax during my last bender. I don't remember what it was like, but I did not recognize the person I had become." I didn't know what his intentions were."
