9 Actors Who Played Multiple Roles in the Same Project

9 Actors Who Played Multiple Roles in the Same Project

"I was like, "I don't even have a twin." I should have been paid twice!

Many actors prefer to be the star and have a seat at the director's table when it comes time to do double duty in a film or TV set. Sometimes, however, fans can see double when actors are given multiple roles in the same movie. These stars were busy filming, whether they wanted to have fun playing multiple characters or a family.

Here are the two main characters who did double duty on the big screen...

1. Ben Stiller

Recently, it was announced that Ben Stiller has been in "final discussions" to appear in the limited series adaptations of "Three Identical Strangers." The series tells the story of three identical triplets who were separated at birth but reunite later in their lives. Ben will portray all three men in the flick -- Bobby Shafran and David Kellman, as well as Eddy Galland.

2. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan played the role of Annie and Hallie, long-lost twins in "The Parent Trap", her breakthrough film. Lindsay was just a preteen when she played the roles. Michael Eisner, Disney CEO, thought Lindsay had a twin sister who starred with her in the film.

"At the premiere Michael Eisner, who was present at Disney at that time, said, 'Where is your twin?' ... I was like, "I don't have twins." I should have been paid twice! That will be something I never forget. That's what I said! Lindsay recalls Lindsay's comments on "The Drew Barrymore show."

3. Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy is well-known for his ability to play multiple characters in his films, from "The Nut Professor" to "Norbit" and "Coming to America." Eddie Murphy plays seven characters in "The Nutty Professor", including Sherman Krump, Granny, Papa, and Mama Krump. Eddie will continue to play multiple characters in films, but "Coming 2 America" is his last.

"You know what, every time I make a makeup video, I always say that this is the last time I'm doing it ---.." Then I end up back in my makeup chair. I swear I won't do it again. Then, something will come along years later that makes it more sense. Eddie stated that he would never do it again.

4. Halle Berry

Halle Berry played six characters in "Cloud Atlas", spanning a span of more than 400 years. They had a variety of ethnic backgrounds and genders, including a German-Jewish lady from 1936 and an older Korean male from 2144. Halle recalls that the costumes and makeup were so convincing that her daughter couldn't recognize her.

Halle explained to EW that her daughter was a big fan of all my costumes and she loved seeing them. But one day, when I approached her as Dr. Ovid, she was confused by his eyes and looked at him. She had an out-of-body experience when I told her, "Hi sweetheart," Her little spirit was seen leaving her body and going to Cleveland. It's still something she doesn't get over. It was terrifying for her to hear the voice of that man.

5. Vanessa Hudgens

She played three characters in Vanessa Hudgens’ "Princess Switch” movie series. Based on Mark Twain’s novel "The Prince and the Pauper", Vanessa played a Chicago baker who switches places with a Duchess. The third flick also features the Duchess’ evil cousin. Vanessa said that the entire thing was a "really good exercise in my creativity."

6. Tatiana Maslany

Tatiana Maslany played 17 characters over the five seasons of "Orphan Black." Each of these characters were created from clones, which were created by an institute for human experiments. John Fawcett, director of Tatiana, says Tatiana's ability switch between characters is a constant delight to the cast and crew.

He told Elle that he didn't understand at first how she did it or how it was happening. "I knew it was a magic moment when she arrived on set. It was that magical thing where the other person would be there.

7. Tom Hardy

He plays the roles of Reggie Kray and Ronnie Kray in Tom Hardy's film "Legend". Although Tom claims it was easy to switch characters, the difficult part for him was convincing the audience that it wasn’t one actor doing both roles.

They were easy to switch between. He explained to EW that the difficult part was making an audience believe there wasn't one performer performing both parts.

8. Mike Myers

Mike Myers is a master at portraying multiple characters in one project. He has done it with "Austin Powers" and "The Pentaverate," both 2022 series. Mike portrays eight characters with a unique backstory. Mike said that while it may seem difficult, he enjoys the process.

He shared that he has characters that "circle the airport looking for a landing spot." "I love performing...and playing characters. That gives you the energy to keep going."

9. Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes plays three generations of Hungarian-Jewish relatives in the 1999 film, "Sunshine". The movie spans several generations from the creation and fall of the Austro–Hungarian Empire until shortly after the 1956 Revolution. Ralph believes it was deliberate for the audience to see him play different characters.

Fiennes stated that there were differences in the haircut and facial hair, but he thought it was a coincidence. "If the storytelling is clear enough, then the audience will understand," Fiennes said to GQ. It didn't feel like the kind of film where the actor changes completely. It's not just me that you need to recognize, it's all of us. It was the connecting element that I was playing all three.
