9 Child Stars Who Had Money Disputes with Their Parents

These disputes often turn into messy court battles

Growing up in the limelight can be difficult.

The money that child stars have worked so hard for is not always what they get.

According to these now-grown celebrities, their parents mismanaged the hard-earned money.

What did these stars have to say about their parents?

1. Dylan and Cole Sprouse

Dylan and Cole Sprouse grew in the spotlight. They appeared on shows such as "Friends" or movies like "Big Daddy", before they reached their tween years. Melanie Wright lost custody when the twins turned 10 and had lost allegedly all their money by that time.

When my father was forced to take custody of us, we lost pretty much everything in the younger parts of our careers. Cole revealed on the podcast "Call Her Daddy", that Cole's mother was the irresponsible one. She was a wonderful artist and a great friend, but was also financially unreliable.

Cole claims he does not "blame" her for the mental health issues and drug addiction she faces, but he has no relationship with her anymore.

2. Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple was already a star as a child when she became one. By the age of 12, she had appeared in more than 40 films. Her parents were required to place the majority of her 20th Century Fox Studios income in a trust ordered by a court. Unfortunately, the parents didn't do what they said and Shirley's alleged fortune of $3 million had been reduced to just $44,000 by the time she was an adult.

3. LeAnn Rimes

LeAnn Rimes began her career as a preteen. Her parents played a major role in her business because of her young age. She claimed that her father and partner were pocketing her earnings by the time she turned 16. She sued her father Wilbur claiming that he and her partner had stolen $7 million from her earnings. LeAnn filed a lawsuit against her father Wilbur, alleging that he and his partner stole $7 million of her earnings. They settled their lawsuit and made amends before her wedding with Dean Sheremet.

LeAnn said to ABC News that there was so much more in life for her. To carry a heavy burden of hatred for someone. It's not worth it. I have never hated my father. I wanted a father. I think I was just really unhappy with his position in my life. "I just wanted him as my father."

4. Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester sued her mother Constance in 2011 after discovering that her mother was using the $7,000 per month she sent to pay for her little brother’s medical bills to fund cosmetic procedures. Leighton Meester claimed that her mother had threatened to sue for $3 million, if Leighton didn't increase the allowance to $10,000 per month. Constance, meanwhile, claimed that Leighton verbally agreed to care for her and her brother. That's why Constance spent the money.

Leighton didn't sue her mother for money. But she wanted the judge to declare there wasn't any contract between them. Leighton's legal battle was won a year later.

5. Aaron Carter

Aaron Carter's relationship with his family was strained before his death. Jane Carter managed his career as a child. He fired her when she allegedly started to dip into his earnings. Aaron claimed at the time that Jane had taken a "significant portion" of his tour earnings, which were reportedly over $100,000. Aaron made the outrageous claim that his family spent $500 million on cars and houses, and he did not get a penny of the profit when the homes and cars were sold.

"I feel betrayed my own mother." I have worked for months -- 10, 11, hours a night, without including school or press appearances - and now I owe money! Aaron made a statement regarding his alleged lost tour earnings.

6. Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman, the star of "Diff'rent Strokes", allegedly found out that his bank account was almost empty when he turned 18. He then sued his parents and his former advisor, accusing them of misappropriating a multimillion-dollar fortune. After a few bad investments and some medical issues, he was forced to declare bankruptcy ten years later. He had not spoken to either of his parents for over 20 years at the time of his death in 2010.

7. Corey Feldman

Corey Feldman started acting at the age of three. At 15, he claimed that his parents were abusive and stole nearly $1 million from his fortune. He applied to be emancipated in order to regain control over his finances. His father sued him.

My parents were very abusive and selfish. They were more concerned about what happened to themselves than with what happened to me. When I attempted to emancipate, my manager father sued for $40,000, claiming that he had taken time off from his business in order to be with me on set," Corey explained to THR.

8. Billy Unger

Billy Unger, a former Disney Channel star, was managed for many years by his father William. However, Billy accused William of mismanaging his finances. Billy Unger fired William in 2015 and took him to court over allegedly mismanaging nearly $400K from his earnings. William was accused of using over $100,000 of Billy’s money for a vacation with a woman and charging Billy a commission of 33.3%, more than double the industry average. Billy demanded that his father repay the money and pay damages in the lawsuit. The legal battle is unclear.

9. Jena Malone

Jena Malone, the actress of "Hunger Games", was 15 years old when she asked her parents for emancipation. She claimed that Deborah had squandered thousands of dollars from her earnings. She claims the money was used for personal expenses and to make loans to family members that were never paid back. Deborah insists the loans were made as investments. Jena was relieved when Deborah agreed to emancipation. She said that she now had "full control" over her career, finances, and life.

Deborah told People later: "I took too many advices from people who did not always have my best interests at heart." "I have to do things my way. "It is degrading to have a child who earns a quarter million dollars, when you've only ever made $10,000."
