Botox has been virtually unopposed since 2002, when it was approved by the FDA as a temporary cosmetic treatment to treat moderate-to-severe lines. Revance Aesthetics wants to change this.
In September 2022, Revance announced in a news release that the FDA had officially approved DAXXIFY(tm) (DaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) to improve wrinkles temporarily. It's very similar in appearance to Botox, but it could be even more effective.
Daxxify may be able to beat Botox by promising more lasting results and using no animal or human byproducts.
A Neuromodulator by Any Other Name
Daxxify belongs to the same group of medicines as Botox and Dysport. They are called neuromodulators. The neuromodulators inject a small amount of botulinumtoxin into the lower muscles. This causes the tissue to relax. This results in a smoother skin appearance (read: less wrinkles).
Daxxify's FDA approval was based upon clinical data from more than 2,700 patients who received 4,200 treatments. Nearly 98% of the participants experienced little or no wrinkles within one day of injection. These results lasted for around 80% of those individuals for four months.
Furthermore, half of the patients had mild to no wrinkles after six months. Some patients also maintained their treatment results for up to nine months after their last Daxxify injection. This is three times more than an average Botox treatment.
What is the Best Thing About Daxxify?
Botox and other neuromodulators are made from human serum albumin which is synthesized in the liver. Daxxify however, uses peptides for its main ingredient. Daxxify may last longer than neuromodulator-like counterparts because it contains peptides, which are amino acids.
Daxxify does not require refrigeration as Botox, and this is also true for other neuromodulators such as Xeomin which also has cosmetic uses.

Although many would consider long-lasting results a good idea, this makes Daxxify a more risky option for first-time treatments. These types of wrinkle treatments have varying results, which has led to the "botched Botox", which has been used for decades in tabloids.
You will have to wait for the side effects of Daxxify to subside. For example, 2% of users reported droopy eyelids and 1% suffered from facial asymmetry.
Botox might have an edge where Botox is not
Botox is FDA-approved for cosmetic use. It can also be used to treat many conditions, including chronic migraines, severe underarm sweating, overactive bladder, urinary leakage, muscle spasms and severe underarm sweating. Botox can be used on all areas of the skin, while Daxxify is approved only for smoothing frown lines.
Companies can't technically promote drugs for unapproved purposes. Doctors can still prescribe drugs for uses that are not approved by the FDA. Daxxify is expected to be the same, according to some scientists.
How can I get it?
It wasn't an easy task to make Daxxify more widely accessible. Revance was hit with a minor setback after an FDA inspection revealed issues in quality control and the working cells bank. These are cells that contain the active ingredient of a drug.

Revance stated in a January 2022 release that FDA concerns were about the manufacturing facility and not the safety or efficacy Daxxify. Based on the September press release it appears that the company has worked through these kinks. Daxxify is expected to hit the market in 2023, according to current estimates.
At the moment, it is not clear how much Daxxify costs. This longer-lasting treatment may allow for more time between visits to the dermatologists, but the cost of one treatment could be higher than the typical Botox treatment. Botox costs approximately $2,000 to $5,000 depending on where you live.
Daxxify is an injectable treatment that can be used to treat a variety of conditions.
