He shared, "My wife has always told me that even in the darkest of times, I am a good father." "I never wanted be a bad dad."
AJ McLean has a new perspective on life after undergoing an outpatient mental health program this summer.
The Backstreet Boy attended a 10-week "intensive" outpatient treatment program in Scottsdale Arizona, which focused on mental health and anxiety.
This past summer I spent about 10 weeks in Scottsdale, Arizona. McLean, who spoke to Us Weekly on Friday, said: "I have no shame saying that I did an intensive outpatient mental health program, for depression and anxiety, trauma. All these things I had not really taken the time for myself."
The 45-year old pop star added that he feels better than ever about himself after the program. "I never had time to find myself, my self-esteem, my self worth, or know that I am valuable."
McLean rose to fame with the boyband when he was 14 years old. "And today, I look in the mirror, and I can say, 'I like myself today.' I've been on an intense health kick and now my children get to see me a new way.
McLean has been motivated to improve his mental health by his children, as well as his own self-esteem.
McLean has two daughters, Elliot and Lyric. They are shared by McLean with his estranged ex-wife, Rochelle McLean. After 11 years of marriage, the couple announced that they would be temporarily separating.
He shared, "My wife has always told me that even in the darkest of times, I am a good father." "I never wanted be a bad dad."
McLean has spoken out about his struggles with substance abuse and family trauma.
McLean, who has spent a lot of time reflecting on his early years, revealed that the outpatient treatment program helped him to make amends with people important in his life. This included his father, whose family he left when he was only three.
McLean announced via Instagram that he had dinner with his father for the first 42 years on Friday.
He told the outlet, "It was a great time." "Being a dad is the greatest job in the entire world. Being a Backstreet Boy was great, but being a dad is even better. It's like nothing else. "Life is pretty good today."
