The Backstreet Boys alum opened up about his battle with addiction: "I almost gave up my marriage, my band and my life."
AJ McLean opens up about the moment he answered Aaron Carter's plea for help.
The 45-year old Backstreet Boys alumnus recalled how he helped "I Want Candy' singer Aaron Carter get a grip on his drug abuse in ABC documentary "Aaron Carter, The Little Prince of Pop."
Aaron contacted me in 2017 and asked for my help. I told him, "Look, if I get you on a flight, I'll make sure that you get treatment." McLean says in the video that he arrived. "I was surprised, but I felt happy. He checked into a Malibu treatment center."
He said, "I talked to him a couple of days later and then he sort of disappeared." It was probably two weeks ago that I contacted my friends in the treatment center and they confirmed that he had checked himself out.
McLean also spoke about his struggles with addiction in another preview. McLean was in the iconic boyband of the '90s with Aaron's older brother Nick Carter.
"I was an addict who could function." Since 2001 I have been in and out the rooms, which means that for 22 years now I've been fighting my own --,". "I almost lost my marriage, I almost lost my band, I almost lost my life. My youngest daughter's reaction to my last relapse, which was 18 months ago, was the final nail in the coffin.
When his daughter was unable to recognize him, the singer of "Everybody" knew that he needed to change.
She said that I did not smell like her father. "That was enough", he confessed. "That was enough for me. I've been sober ever since, and I intend to stay sober." It's something that happens every day."
The singer of "Aaron's Party", was found dead in his Lancaster, CA residence on November 5. TMZ broke the news first. The outlet was told by several sources that Carter's corpse had been discovered in a bath tub.
The documentary "Aaron Carter, the Little Prince of Pop", will cover the childhood of the child actor and his peak of popularity in the early 2000s. The documentary will cover his mental health issues, his family dramas and his struggle with addiction. It will also include his death.
The film, which will be streamed on Hulu from May 1, will include interviews with various figures in Carter’s life including his former fiancee Melanie Martin as well as Christson Carlson Romano.
