After the incident, an alligator trapper captured the reptile measuring 11 feet long.

A Florida alligator killed an 85-year old woman on Monday after she tried to save her dog.

WPTV reported that Gloria Serge was walking her dog in St. Lucie when the gator grabbed her pet. The gator ate her dog and she tried to save it but was fatally injured. The dog survived.

Serge's neighbor and friend, who saw the entire attack, spoke to WPBF about it.

She said that she saw her neighbor, my neighbor, being bitten by an alligator on the leg and being pulled into water. "I only remember her pushing her hair out of the face and getting air. I just said, 'Swim towards the paddle boats!' She responds, "I can't, but the gator has you."

The neighbor ran to her garage in an effort to get something to help the victim or to hit the gator. But when she returned home, "she wasn't there anymore."

She added, "Which haunts my right now, there's no I could do. I couldn't even do anything. I couldn't get into the water."

CNN reports that officers from St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), responded to a 911 call about an alligator attack. A contracted nuisance alligator trapper arrived at the scene approximately two hours later.

Robert Lilly, a trapper, said that it was a "definitely a fight." "[We] caught him at the bottom. He never surfaced. He was adamant that he would not move. We were able get a second hook and a hard line into him to get him up.

Reports indicate that the gator weighed between 600 and 700 pounds and was just shy of 11 feet long.

The FWC released a statement saying that it had sent its deepest sympathies and thoughts to the victims' family. The FWC gives public safety the highest priority and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program, (SNAP), to address any complaints about specific alligators that pose a danger to property, people, or pets.
