A neurodivergent musical prodigy tells his story through song. Plus, two of the best original songs ever recorded on this show are available for country and pop radio!
As "American Idol," continued, the third week of auditions saw original songs and miraculous comebacks.
We also had another Normandy situation. You may recall the last year's contestant, who arrived with a weak speaking voice and belted out Tina Turner's songs in a full-throated baritone. The same thing happened with another contestant, who had a singing voice that was so different from her speaking voice.
Lala Kent not impressed with Tom Sandoval's Cheating Apology.
Two great original songs were received. However, the quality of the singers was not always the best. The first brought us a great country song that was easily heard on the radio today. It was full of heart and soul. We were smitten by the other song, which was a pop hit with clever lyrics and danceability. It's thrilling to see artists who are fully baked being able to be themselves.
Then there was the young lady who decided to do a cover song on piano and show her true colors. She did not cover any song. She took on Lionel Richie’s "Hello" and made his jaw drop.
Add in a neurodivergent musical prodigy who performed another original song, and a young man who had to learn how to walk again after a terrible accident. The night was full of inspiration and tears. The season of "Idol," seems to be filled with talent and tears.
Fair warning: I will probably be harsher than my coworkers Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan because I am safe at home. However, I may be nicer. Maybe.
To make it more fun, I will rank the performances in order of worst to best to find my favorite performers each week. This way, I can easily see who is the best and you can vote with your approval.

Theater Kids Medley
The performances were so theatrical and exaggerated in their delivery that even the strongest voices could not match this show. We're now ready to cast for "Broadway Idol", so these talented children can be connected to the right place to take their talents. We're not talking here about "Grease": You're The One That I Want! Casting a show or a role is not the goal, it's about finding Broadway's next great stars. PBS tried it years ago, but the networks are still wary of "Grease." Wouldn't it be great to see all this hamminess and theatricality on a weekly program like this?

Bre
("All Night Long," Lionel Richie, 27, Burbank CA) Bre's job is a dueling piano player gave us a clue as to how it all happened. Lionel was already sitting next to her at the piano, belting out his tune following a commercial break. We can only speculate that they were re-creating her profession. Bre's voice was perhaps even worse than Lionel on his classic. Her voice was not strong enough to warrant a run on the show. We found it a bit too pitchy and warbly. However, the duet was great fun with Lionel really nailing it. She made it seem like the experience was more powerful than we thought.

Mikey Burson
("Cold as Ice," Foreigner – 22, Nashville, TN") Mikey had something very interesting happen. It wasn't that Mikey was playing with his mom as his pianist. Although he has a strong voice, a wide range and lots of volume, it sounded nasally and in his head. His voice was unusually thin, even though he was singing admirably the crazy Foreigner songs. Katy explained that he didn't reveal any of his artistry on the note-for-note cover, and that this made it difficult for the panel to decide what to do. It was clear that something felt hollow. It could have been too performative with no substance behind Katy's intent to be a singer.

Aubrey Plaza, Ben Affleck, Winona Ryder: Awards Night: A Single Face Expression Speaks It All
Keelin
("Don’t Call Me") Keelin, 24, New York, NY This is a great pop bop. The track's spoken parts and overall energy were great. Keelin's vocals were the only problem. Although she was a great pop songwriter, her voice is not the best. She should be writing songs for others. To be able to still sing the notes while choreographing and performing her moves, she needs to work harder on her voice. Everything was perfectly orchestrated from every vocal moment to the backing tracks to each move. The voice was the only thing that was lacking that same polish and preparation. She clearly has talent. But can she step up?

Emma Busse
("Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," Elton John, 20 Vancouver, BC) This was her first appearance after the disastrous musical theater montage. Emma could it be? Katy warns Emma that she must be able show a different side to the stage. While she did fall into certain bad habits while performing, there's no denying her range and power. It had some unique character, especially in the beginning. Her vibrato could be calmer and less theatrical. Luke challenged her to sing Happy Birthday, but she ultimately had to take out the vibrato completely. She was able do it and nail the pitch. This is where she should go if she decides that this is her direction. You already have the voice.

Adin Boyer
Adin Boyer (22 Lake Forest, CA) Adin joined in part to promote representation for neurodiversity. He is also a prodigy at music and has perfect pitch. He spoke out about his sensory issues, which can cause him to have meltdowns when he hears loud noises. He developed a way to cope. He now focuses on the pitch of loud noises to identify it. This allows him to avoid the chasm. He was poised to be a concert pianist but Coldplay and his pitch ID trick refocused him on the singer-songwriter path.
He brought a unique original song with unusual intonation, rhythm and syncopation. Although his classical training is evident in his voice, there is a touch of musical theatre in his writing and phrasing. This creates a unique auditory experience, as he incorporates all these influences into his singer-songwriter world. This piece had us feeling all over, but we were never less than captivated. It will be fascinating to see if he can control his singing excesses and find a way to connect.

Sara Beth
("You know I'm no good," Amy WInehouse/ "Bennie and the Jets," Elton John, 25, Roseville California) This was an intriguing one because Sara, a young mother of three, doesn't consider herself to be a musician and can't even decide if this is her dream. Katy was not there for her. Katy was not impressed despite a solid enough cover of Amy Winehouse's karaoke. Sara claimed that she originally had the Elton John cover in mind, but that she changed her mind due to Sara's voice. Katy forced her to accept him.
Although she remained a mystery, this song helped her to express her true voice. She is one of those natural talents that doesn't know what she has. Although she hasn't tried it, the raw materials are there. She could be very excited if she decides that she wants it and pushes herself to make it happen. Luke and the rest of her panel remained skeptical but eventually put her through. She must decide if this is what her heart desires. We wish she would so that we can see the potential for blossoms.

Tanner Charles
Tanner Charles, 20, Broken Arrow, OK. Tanner created an original song for Tanner's girlfriend to celebrate her birthday. It was a sweet song and sounded modern. Tanner's voice is very clear and Tanner needs to sing deeper to give his voice that extra power. This show is a great one because Tanner has that unassuming, swoon-worthy charm that makes him stand out. He could be a great performer if he can develop his full voice and connect with cover songs like this.

Preston Duffee
("Something to Write About") Preston Duffee, 21, Hartsville, SC Preston lost the life of his mother to suicide several years ago, leaving him and his sister temporarily homeless. He was unable to overcome his mother's bipolar disorder and depression. However, Preston shared her story and memorialized her memory before sharing a song that touched on all aspects of his life.
This was honestly one of our favorite original country songs that we have ever heard on a reality TV show. It was a great song with all the right elements to be a hit, from clever wordplay to strong imagery and a feeling of faith to its beautiful throughline. The unique rhythm and phrasing throughout kept us on our toes. The lyrics spoke volumes about Preston's humanity and the lessons he has learned from his hardships. This was a great way for Preston to present himself to the judges and the rest of the world.

Elijah McCormick
(Bless the Broken Road, Rascal Flatts 21 Raeford NC) Elijah is now fully recovered from an horrific car accident that occurred just after his high school graduation. He said that he had to learn how to walk again and talk again. Elijah is now ready to pursue his singing dream after a total of 79 days and ten surgeries. He even tried to sing from his hospital bed. He also shared with us that his mother had signed him up for "Idol before his accident. He had his ID number and was ready when he suddenly stopped.
It must have been a remarkable recovery because he now has such power and texture in his voice that, if you hadn't known, it would have been hard to believe he had ever suffered such an accident. He gave this piece a lot of thought and slow it down to emphasize certain phrases or words. It has a rich, full sound. However, we were left wondering if it would be possible to distinguish him from other more distinctive artists.
In their vocals, the judges thought of Willie Spence, the "Idol” runner-up who tragically died in an automobile accident last year. But we're not quite ready to go there yet. He has to be there for us.

We Ani
("Anyone," Demi Lovett - Harlem, NY) We enters with a high-pitched voice (we've heard it before on "Idol") and then can drop it down to belt out an honest and sincere rendition of one of the most moving songs of the past decade. Although this song is difficult to master, Demi sometimes struggles with it. But We managed to convey the emotion and the loneliness and the power of the song effortlessly. It was an amazing performance. This was a stunning performance. She is a wonderful performer and has so much talent.

Marybeth Byrd
(If It Hadn’t Been For Love," The Steeldrivers, 21, Armorel AR) Marybeth added a little bit of her "barbecue sauce," to this track, and each choice only enhanced the experience. It was an amazing performance. We felt all of her personality and visions as artists from that moment. It has great character, with cracks and breaks all through and a lot power and range. This is an intriguing voice that will make you want to listen more. We love unexpected and memorable vocal performances!

Olivia Soli
("Hello," Lionel Richie, 20, Los Angeles, CA. Olivia has nerves of steel. Or she simply had so much confidence because of how talented she is. This was a very tasteful and powerful rendition of Lionel’s classic. This was just as well suited to her powerful vocals as Lionel's original. It was exactly what she meant to sing, and that's the point of it all. This one even Lionel needed to get up on his feet.
