For certain generations, roller skating brings back fond childhood memories. Perhaps you grew up at the roller rink for school events or parties. Or just to have fun with friends. Roller rinks are still around and have seen a resurgence in skaters. There's another place that roller skating is a popular way to pass the time, and you don't need to travel far to find it.

Roller Skating Lifestyle

Unless you lived under a rock during COVID-19 lockdowns you likely noticed the growing popularity of roller skating, which became an accepted outdoor activity. Even though people were asked to stay at home, many places allowed outdoor activities while social distancing was acceptable. People began to find outdoor activities that they could do alone or with their friends. This led to the rise in popularity of roller skating.

This is something I admit to having done. I found that quads were a great stress reliever and a way to get out of lockdown all around the globe. During the pandemic, roller skating was an accessible and affordable option. You could skate on the street, in a skate park or even in your basement.

The popularity of getting into a pair or quads from Germany, Kenya, and the USA was due to Instagram reels and TikTok videos. Oumi Janta is just one of many skaters who helped popularize jam skating in 2020. Even though her reel was uploaded in November 2020, many people still comment on it and love her quad moves.

Celebrities have been involved in roller skating mania. The viral video of Nathan Apodaca (known as @420doggface208 via TikTok) was released in October 2020. After his car was broken down, he recorded himself skating to work to Fleetwood Mac's song "Dreams." Stevie Nicks even made fun of Apodaca's video by putting her skates on and singing her own lyrics.

A pastime that has roots in civil rights

Roller skating did not begin with the pandemic and didn't stop once lockdown orders were lifted. Roller skating is a popular sport that has been enjoyed by many. It can be used as a form of protest, a fun activity or a competitive sport. Many people are familiar with skate clubs that emerged in the 1970s, when disco was popular. Did you know that modern roller skateboarding actually began during civil rights?

Many roller rinks attempted to keep Black skaters from the floor when desegregation was introduced in the 1950s. The Black community organized sit-ins and protests. What was the result? Many roller rinks held separate black and white skate nights. During Black skate nights, skaters invented jam, hip-hop, and rhythm skating.

These same styles were more popular in the '70s and '80s and '90s. In 2022, the quad moves of the civil rights era are being reinterpreted by modern-day skaters. You can take it on the street, or you can join your friends at the roller rink. Just keep rolling.
