Arnold recalls the moment when he told Maria, but he doesn't wish for his "major fail" to make Joseph feel "that he isn't welcomed in this life -- because he very much welcomes him in this life"

Arnold Schwarzenegger tells Maria Shriver that he learned of the child he fathered with another woman at a couple counseling session.

In a Netflix documentary simply called "Arnold", the action star confesses that Shriver had asked him directly during the therapy session whether he was Joseph Baena. Mildred, the boy's mom, worked as a housekeeper for them.

In the docuseries, the now 75-year old tells it all and remembers the moment when his ex-wife learned about the indiscretion.

Arnold recalls that Maria and he went to counseling every week. "In one session, the counselor told us, "I think Maria wants to be specific today about something." She wants to find out if you're the father of Joseph. "I thought my heart had stopped when I said the truth.

The "FUBAR' star claims to have told her, "Yes, Maria, Joseph's my son." She was devastated by that. In 1996, I had an affair. In the beginning, I didn't really know. It was only after I started to feel that the older he became, the more clear it became. Then it was just a question of how you kept this secret? How can you keep it a secret?"

Arnold is reluctant to discuss this "failure," for a number of reasons, including that "everytime I do so it opens the wounds up again."

"I feel that my f----up has caused my family enough pain." All had to suffer. Maria was made to suffer. Maria had to suffer. Joseph. Joseph. Everyone," he says, per People.

Katherine, Christina and Patrick are among his children from Maria, whom he married in 1986. In 2011, Schwarzenegger's marriage to Shriver was ended just a few days before the public revelation that he fathered Joseph with a former housekeeper, Mildred. This revelation was made after his tenure as California governor had ended.

In the documentary, Arnold states: "I will have to live with this for the rest of my lifetime." People will remember both my successes and failures. This is a serious failure. "I have had previous failures, but this one is on a different level.

He also says that he doesn't talk about it much because of the "fantastic child" who was born out of the affair.

"What I did was wrong." "I don't wish to make Joseph feel unwelcome in this world, because he has a very warm welcome in this one," he says. "I love him, and he's turned out to an extraordinary young person."

Arnold is grateful to Maria, despite their failed marriage, for continuing to raise a family together.

"There's nothing more important than having a partner who is there for you every step of your journey, and Maria was just that." He says, "We have a great relationship." We are together on any special occasion. It's not like when we used to be all under one roof together as a family. It's no longer the case.

Shriver revealed, in an episode of "Making Space With Hoda K. Kotb", that she went to a convent for life advice following the end of their marriage.

The divorce was finalized ten years after the initial filing, in December 2021.

"Arnold", a Netflix original series, will be available starting June 7th.
