Hanks warned Butler that if he jumped off the train, he could suffer emotional whiplash.
Austin Butler revealed Tom Hanks had pitched his new series Masters of the Air to him due to his concern about his mental health after his role in Elvis.
Butler talked about his meeting Hanks, and his role in the new miniseries.
The actor revealed that Hanks and he were having dinner together after wrapping up Elvis when they were pitched the World War II Series.
They had both starred together in Baz's biography of the legendary singer, released in 2022. The film was well received by audiences and critics. Butler played Elvis Presley, while Hanks portrayed manager "Colonel Tom Parker".
Butler claims Hanks said to him, "You have been immersed in Elvis so deeply that it is best for your mental health to move on." Hanks also told Butler, "'You would be better off moving straight onto something else.'" Butler says Hanks told him: "If you jump off the train and you have emotional whiplash, it's best to go somewhere else. . . '"
Butler revealed Hanks's conversation by saying, "'And you know, I have this thing that I am producing.'"
Butler acknowledged that his adopting Elvis's accent continued after filming, without him knowing it. He had identified with the King so long.
"It was the experience of doing Elvis that made me push the limits of what's possible. Not every filming experience will be the same," Butler said of the biopic.
"I'm not sure I'll have another experience like that, but digging makes me feel alive."
Masters of the Air is a WWII film produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. It follows WWII airmen "who risk their lives with the 100th Bomb Group - a brotherhood formed by courage, loss and triumph," as describes it in the Apple TV+ description.
