Ben Affleck Compares Golf to Meth, Recalls Approaching Michael Jordan About Nike Movie 'Air'

Ben Affleck Compares Golf to Meth, Recalls Approaching Michael Jordan About Nike Movie 'Air'

Affleck said, "If you're going f---ing around talking about Michael Jordan," while discussing his film "Air," which is about Jordan's relationship with Nike.

Ben Affleck opens up about his relationship with Michael Jordan...and golf.

The actor-director spoke out about approaching Jordan to discuss his film "Air," which will tell the story of the "game-changing relationship" between Jordan and Nike and the creation of the shoes, Air Jordans.

Affleck, 50 years old, stated that he reached out and invited Jordan, 60 to join him on a round of golf. He said that he did not want to play a round with Jordan, the former professional athlete, because he feels the sport is "like meth."

"I said, "Please, can you come out?" He was amazing,'" Affleck said to THR. "[He said], 'Yeah, no problem. Go to the golf course. I met him and went out. I waited for him finish his game. I don't golf myself. Because it just eats up people's lives."

He explained that he views golf as meth, and continued to discuss his thoughts about the sport. They have more teeth than us, but we don't see people ever coming out of this. You don't see them again once they begin golfing."

The "Good Will Hunting” star shared more details from the conversation and clarified that "Air" was not the official Michael Jordan story.

Affleck stated that Affleck was not paid in the way that he would have been if this were true. They should back up the Michael Jordan story if they're going to make it. I was saying to Mike, "Mike, I won't make the movie if it's not cool with you." It's impossible for me to do it. "I want to know what is important to you."

The Oscar winner also revealed that he knew Jordan before he won the Oscar, noting that they were "mutual friends" who "periodically played cards" together.

"None of this sounds good, OK?" It's not as if he would be like, "Oh yeah, Ben's mine," Affleck shared. "He would be like, Yeah! I know him.

"Jordan is - he's my hero. He continued, "I know how significant and meaningful a figure that he is, especially in the African American community." If you are going to talk about Michael Jordan in a disrespectful manner, it is not appropriate. You don't have to do a hagiography. But, it is not your job. I have never met anyone with such charisma or power. They just walk into a room and the energy just reverberates. Is it him, or the way people treat it? Are you able to recall him from your past? It's very powerful, I don't know.

Amazon claims that "Air," directed by Affleck, "reveals an incredible game-changing partnership between Michael Jordan, a rookie, and Nike's fledgling division of basketball, which revolutionized sports and culture through the Air Jordan brand."

The synopsis states that "This moving story follows a career-defining gamble by an unconventional team with all on the line, the uncompromising vision and vision of a mother, who knows the value of her son’s immense talent, as well as the basketball phenom who will become the greatest ever."

Damon plays Sonny Vacarro, a Nike executive. Affleck is the co-founder of Nike, Phil Knight. Viola Davis portrays Jordan's mother Deloris in the film.

"Air" is Affleck's ninth film with Damon, and Damon's first directorial collaboration.

Jay Mohr and Jay Wayans star in the movie. Julius Tennon is Davis' husband and plays her father, James Jordan in the movie.

"Air", which will be shown in theaters on April 5, is a preview of what Prime Video has to offer.
