The President's witty remarks on Disney v Ron DeSantis, Fox News, the "Dark Brandon " memes, and even his age were a hit, before Ron Wood Jr., host of "The Daily Show", went on to attack all these topics as well as Vice President Kamala Harris.
Joe Biden is well aware that he will be criticized because of his age. But he was in fine, sharp, comic, fighting form, at the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday.
The 80-year old POTUS delivered a solid standup performance before the evening's "Daily Show' correspondent Ron Wood Jr. He took aim at the firings and battles of Don Lemon and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis with Disney as well as Fox News' fight with Dominion Voting Systems, and his own age.
He told the crowd, "I understand that age is an entirely reasonable issue." It's on the minds of everyone, and by everyone, I mean The New York Times.
He snorted, "You say I am over the hill." "Don Lemon would call that a man at his prime." "Don Lemon would say that's a man in his prime."
He made one last joke about his age, mentioning Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch who is 93. He said, "I like Rupert Murdoch," of the media mogul who is 13 years older than him. "How can I hate a guy that makes me look like Harry Styles?"
The president also took a shot at Fox News for firing Carlson, saying that his reelection campaign was not yet finished.
Then he joked, "Fox News is owned by Dominion Voting Systems", referring to Dominion Voting Systems' $785.5-million settlement with the network. He claimed that he had "called Fox fair, honest and truthful and I could be sued."
The president also aimed a quick jab at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis has been involved in a fight over Walt Disney World’s independence since the media giant criticised the state’s “don’t say gay” law.
He said that he had prepared a number of Ron DeSantis quips, but Mickey Mouse got there before me. Disney is suing DeSantis over his attacks on the Orlando Resort, and he claims it's government retaliation.
Would You Like to See More Wood?
Roy Wood Jr., the evening's host was not as gentle in his barbs. After Biden warmed up the audience, Wood Jr., a long-time correspondent for "The Daily Show," went even harder.
Before leaving the stage Biden said to Wood: "I will be fine with your humor but I am not sure about Dark Brandon." He then donned his trademark aviator sunglasses that sparked the memes.
Wood made jokes about the same topics as Biden, but he went much further and darker than the President. Perhaps Wood needed the aviator!
Wood, referring to riots that broke out in France when the retirement age was raised to 64 years old, said of the president: "In America, we have an 80 year-old man who begs us for four additional years of work."
He said, as if he were Biden. "That's no campaign slogan. That's a request." Later, he said, "Say whatever you want to our president. When he wakes from his nap, the work gets done."
He clearly swung at Carlson and Lemon harder, saying "we are united under one thing and that is scandal."
He said that "scandals" have devoured careers in the past year, referring both to firings and Dominion's lawsuit against Fox News for debunking its 2020 election claims.
Wood told the staff at Carlson's late-night news program that he could sympathize with their situation. Wood said, "I am a Daily Show employee and I was also blindsided by the abrupt departure of a fake news-program host."
Wood continued, "Tucker caught up." Wood added, "Tucker got caught up just like the guy from Vanderpump Rules." He was referring to the Scandoval, where Tom Sandoval was caught cheating with Raquel Levy on Ariana Madix -- the scandal that has been dominating news headlines for the past few months.
He joked, referring to President Obama, that right-wing pundits need to return to air because "millions of Americans don't know why they hate" him.
Wood stated that Tucker Carlson was the first Fox News host to be fired for something which is only partially related to how he treats woman. That's progress. He broke the ceiling of the a**hole.
Wood continued, "Speaking about a-holes." "Don Lemon has lost his job."
Wood explained that "Don Lemon made a public statement saying he was fired by CNN. Then CNN issued a press release saying they had offered Don a chance to meet." "They were forced to part because Don Lemon couldn't accurately report on Don Lemon."
He then criticized the network for letting him go after so few scandals. He said that Don Lemon had been a diva, and he'd said two women looked raggedy. But, it was part of a promotion for Fox News.
Wood went after the vice president in a manner that was at least a little complimentary to Kamala. Wood noted that there's a lot of focus on what Kamala Harris does or doesn’t do as Vice President, which he calls a “disrespectful” question.
He said, "That is a disrespectful answer because no one ever asked this question to the vice president before a woman was appointed." "I don’t know what Mike Pence has done. "The only thing I know of Mike Pence is that it's true. He's good at hiding and seeking at the Capitol."
He joked, "It's a perfect job for a Black Woman -- shouldn't it be? But it is." He said it didn't really matter what she had done, because a man would get the credit.
He then turned to Biden and said: "And by-the-way, Mr. Presiden, I don't know how you managed that wonderful job.
The comedian took a few shots at Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas and his latest scandals. He also gave some advice to journalists about their "fair and balanced reporting" being hidden behind paywalls.
Wood said that people couldn't afford to know the truth. "Say whatever you want about conspiracy theories, but it's at least affordable."
He praised local journalism and called for its support. He spoke passionately of his mother's work in education and his father's radio career.
Biden spoke also of the importance the fourth estate plays in a democratic society, and reiterated his commitment to freeing journalists who are wrongfully imprisoned abroad.
