Billy Baldwin has revealed his own personal connection to the arrest of a suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders after Friday's announcement.

Rex Heuermann was arrested for the murders according to several reports. However, authorities haven't officially revealed his name. At a later press conference, more information will be revealed.

In 2010, an escort left a client's house and disappeared. A search in the area revealed 10 sets of human remains, many of which belonged to other sexworkers. Local authorities have been baffled by the case for many years before today's update.

Baldwin, who attended high school with suspect, took to Twitter in shock as the arrest made headlines.

He tweeted: "I woke up this morning and learned that the Gilgo Beach Serial Killer suspect was Rex Heuermann, my classmate from high school." "Berner high school Massapequa New York, class of 1981 Married with two children, architect. 'Average guy ... quiet, family man.' Massapequa in shock. 23andMe strikes back ???"

In 2010, sex worker Shannan Gilt ( below the center ) went missing after leaving a client’s house in Oak Beach. Gilbert is heard saying "There's someone after me" in a 911 call made public for the first-time in 2022.

Police discovered the remains of Melissa Barthelemy (24), Maureen Brainard Barnes (25), Amber Lynn Costello (27), and Megan Waterman (22) -- all four women who worked as escorts for Craigslist. They were dubbed "the Gilgo Four".

In April 2011, three sets of remains were discovered, including those of a toddler, a male unknown, and Valerie Mark, a 24-year old who worked as an escort. A week later, two more sets of remains, including one that matched the DNA of the mother of a toddler whose partial remains had been discovered in Nassau County’s Hempstead Lake State Park, in 1997, were found. The other set of remains matched those found on Fire Island, in 1996.

Gilbert's phone and purse, as well as his remains, were not discovered until December 2011, however. The scene also contained a belt that was believed to be the suspect's, embossed either with the letters "HM", "WH", or both. Gilbert's disappearance led to the Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation. However, in 2022 when the authorities released the 9-1-1 message, they announced that although they believed her death was tragic, it "wasn't murder and most probably not criminal."

Robert Kolker's book Lost Girls : An Unsolved Mystery was about the investigation of the Long Island Serial Killer, also known as Craigslist Ripper or Gilgo Beach Killer, and Manorville Butcher. It was later adapted to the Netflix film Lost Girls in 2020, starring Amy Ryan and Gabriel Byrne.
