Bradley Cooper Feels 'Very Lucky' at 19 Years Sober, Journey Helped A Star Is Born

Bradley Cooper talks about his struggle with substance abuse in Running Wild with Bear Grylls The Challenge. He reveals how his career was almost destroyed by his addiction before he became sober.

Bradley Cooper feels "very fortunate" about his career, and his 19-year sobriety. The actor talked about his recovery and addiction on The Challenge.

Cooper was asked by Grylls if he had ever experienced any "wild years" and he replied that a lot of them happened very early in his life. "In terms alcohol and drugs, yes." "But nothing to do fame," he replied.

I was lucky. He said, "I got sober when I was 29 years old and have been sober since 19 years." "I've had a lot of luck."

In 2009, he talked about the Hangover as a career-changing movie for him. Luckily, he was already 36 years old and had been sober and in his career for years. He said, "I had been in the business for 10 years and was just slapping around. I didn't lose myself in fame."

Cooper said that while fame was not a factor in his struggle with sobriety he did admit the death of his father to lung cancer in 2011 was a major challenge. "I had a very nihilistic outlook on life, and I was convinced that I would die," Cooper told Grylls.

He continued: "It was not great at first, but then I realized that I had to accept who I am and find peace with it." Then, things started to even out.

Cooper's struggles with addiction and his sobriety would prove to be a boon, as he admitted it "made things easier" for him when he took on A Star Is Born. Cooper directed the film and also starred in it as a struggling musician opposite Lady Gaga.

Cooper admitted that this made it easier for him to enter the situation. "Thank goodness, I was in a stage of my life when I felt comfortable with it all. I could let myself really go." "I've been very lucky with the roles that I've played."

He said, "It has been a blessing." "I hope to continue doing it."

A Star Is Born became a hit in 2008, and was also a favorite among critics. It was nominated eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Supporting Actor, and both Gaga, and Cooper received nominations for lead acting. The duet "Shallow" would win Original Song.
