"My mother did not raise a hypocrite."
All indications point to Brendan Fraser as the frontrunner in the 2023 awards race for his performance in "The Whale." But don't be surprised if he doesn't attend any awards show, even if he is nominated.
Fraser, 53, spoke out about his past with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which produces the Golden Globes. He had previously accused Philip Berk, former president of HFPA, of sexual assault.
GQ spoke with "The Mummy" in 2018. He claimed that Berk had groped and assaulted Fraser at a luncheon back in 2003. This incident was the reason why he left Hollywood. Berk admitted previously to having grabbed Fraser's butt but claimed that it was in jest.
Fraser was recently asked by the magazine if he would be attending the 2023 Golden Globes, if invited. Fraser said that he wouldn't.
In the latest GQ cover story, he stated that he has more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association then a respect for it. "No, I won't participate."
He said, "It's because I have a lot of history with them." My mother wasn't a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not this.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association immediately announced that it was conducting an internal investigation after the star of "Gods and Monsters," made his allegations against Berk. However, it did not share its conclusions.
Fraser claimed that HFPA contacted his at the time and asked him to sign the following joint statement. "Although it was concluded Mr. Berk inappropriately touched M. Fraser, evidence supports that it was meant to be taken as a joke, and not as a sexual advancement." (Read more, here.)
Fraser stated that he did not agree to the statement. Berk previously said to GQ that he had not been disciplined by the HFPA.
After Berk's allegation, the HFPA continued as if nothing had ever happened. The Golden Globes ceremony was also held that year.
Fraser said to GQ, "I knew they'd close ranks." "I knew that they would get in the way. They would win the story. "I knew I had no future in that system."
He said that the award show was continuing to run the previous year because it was too prickly, sharp-edged, or icky for people not to want to be the first to invest emotionally in it.
The actor in "The Mummy Returns" claimed that the HFPA never apologized. GQ however noted that they had apologized twice.
Fraser said that if the group tried to mend fences in the future with him, it would have been his responsibility to do so.
"And it would need to be, I don’t know what the word is I’m looking for... sincere?" He added. "I would like to see some way that medicine can be made from poison. It's not something I know. That would be my hope. It's not all about me.
After a Los Angeles Times report revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had zero Black journalists, it was also under fire from the Golden Globes and Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
To counter the backlash, 21 additional members were added to the HFPA to improve diversity. NBC, the network that broadcasts the Globes, made the unfortunate decision not to air the event in 2022. However, the criticism was met with strong support from the HFPA, which hopes to diversify its programming and grow.
NBC confirmed in September that the Golden Globes would return for the 2023 ceremony.
Fraser stated that he isn't convinced by the proposed changes to the HFPA.
When GQ asked him if he believed in the organization's reforms, he replied "No" at the moment. "Maybe they will...I don’t know what they’re going to do. "I don't know."
TooFab contacted the HFPA about Fraser's decision not to attend, even if he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
