Fraser recalls the near-death experience he had on set of 1999 film "The Next Thing I Knew, my elbow was in mine ear, the whole world was upside down, there was gravel between my teeth and everyone was really silent," Fraser said.
Brendan Fraser was a consummate professional in his role in "The Mummy". It almost cost him his life.
The 54-year old actor, who appeared on Tuesday's episode "The Kelly Clarkson Show," said that he was "nearly" dead while filming a scene for the 1999 flick in the which she starred with Rick O'Connell.
Clarkson asked Fraser if "The Mummy" was the film where he "almost lost his life" while filming stunts. Fraser laughed and replied, "Nearly." "Well, I was accidentally choked out."
Fraser recalls that the "hanging sequence" was shot while it was being filmed. He said, "I was standing on one of my toes, with the rope around my neck, and you can only move so far," he added. "And Stephen Sommers, [director] ran over to me and said, "Hey, it doesn’t really look like your choking. Can you sell it?" "And [director Stephen Sommers] ran over and he said, 'Hey, it doesn't really look like you're choking -- can you sell it?'" And I was like, "All right, fine." So I thought, "One more time, man."
He continued, "And the camera flew around, and then I went up on my toes and the guy holding it up above me pulled it up a bit higher. I was stuck on both of my toes -- there was no other way but down." He was pulling up and I was going to the ground.
Fraser said, "The next thing that I knew, my elbow had entered my ear. The world was upside down, there was gravel between my teeth, and everybody was really quiet."
The Screen Actors Guild Award Winner alluded to the fact that he had almost passed out before the film's stunt coordinator woke him with a few claps. The stunt coordinator thanked Fraser for his dedication in performing the stunt.
Clarkson was told by Fraser, "Congratulations, you are in the club -- the exact same thing happened with Mel Gibson on Braveheart," and he joked, "Thanks, it's a good idea!" I wanna go home!"
Fraser spoke out to The Telegraph about the physical pain he suffered in his early film career. He also talked about how it affected his physique.
He said, "I am older now. I don’t look as I did in those days. And I don’t necessarily want to."
Fraser was physically fit and strong at the time. However, this came at a great cost.
He said that he was a bit jinxed from years of performing my own stunts, and needed to have a surgery to fix his spine and the hinges.
He was so tired that he began to put himself together like a gladiator, using muscle tape and ice pack. To get through the scene, he also strapped on a Transformer-like exoskeleton.
He said that "those physical performances, whether dancing, fighting or comedy, had an element self-sacrifice." "But it was not very clever of me at any."
Fraser's performance in "The Whale" has been praised by critics. He received nominations for the 2023 Oscars and Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA, SAG Awards, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, Critics’ Choice, BAFTA, and 2023 Oscars. On Sunday, he won the SAG Awards and the Critics' Choice award. Is Fraser going to win the Oscar? We will have to wait and see what happens when the 95th Annual Academy Awards air on ABC March 12.
