The "Mummy' star said he fought the urge to "fix", in order to teach his son how to provide for himself.
Brendan Fraser recently described his experience as a dad after learning that his son Griffin was diagnosed with autism.
The 54-year old academy award-winning actor was recognized at the Greenwich International Film Festival’s inaugural GIFF Inspiration Talk on Wednesday. He shared that his 20-year son has given him a new perspective on parenting.
"I am not an expert in the different types of spectrum disorders. "I'm not an expert on the varieties of spectrum disorders. Fraser said that his son Griffin had a speech delay from an early age. He got a diagnoses, and I'm sure many of you can understand or comprehend the shock that came from not knowing what to expect.
He acknowledged that both he and Afton felt frustrated from time to time. Fraser admitted that it was impossible to get an answer from a leprechaun, no matter what medical book or source he consulted. "The answer is unknown."
Fraser and Smith share Griffin with their children Holden (18) and Leland (16).
The "Mummy" actor recalled that despite the desire to find solutions and "fix" Griffin, he resisted this urge to allow his son to teach them what he needed.
Fraser added, "It made me realize, as did his mother, that there are many people willing to assist, but it is up to us to have the courage to do so. It's our job to be their parents, families and loved ones to simply ask for help." "And we can do this together."
He said, "Of the many people I have met who have had so much experience working with children and families, they all agree on the same thing." We are all learning at the same pace.
In December 2022 the actor told Interview Magazine that his inspiration for "The Whale" came from his experience living with Griffin.
Fraser plays a reclusive 600-pound writer who is trying to reconnect with his estranged child while suffering from an eating disorder.
He just turned 20. He's 6'5" tall. He has big hands, feet and a large body. "I know what it's like to live with someone who is obese," he said at the time.
Griffin was described as "the manifestation of Love" by the "George of the Jungle' actor.
Fraser said, "He knows nothing about irony because of the beauty of his range -- you can call it disorder if you like but I disagree." "He does not know what cynicism means. You can't insult him. You can't be insulted by him. "He's the most happy person, and in my life, and many others, he is also the embodiment of love."
He said, "Being around my children and their mother and our family gave me such love. If ever I needed something of value to translate what was important for Charlie [character from 'The Whale'], then I didn't need to look too far."
