It's hard to bear the weight of thousands upon thousands of opinions about how you look every day.
Nicola Coughlan is fed up with people focusing on her body.
On Sunday, the actress from "Bridgerton" took to Instagram and Twitter to send a message out to her fans, followers and anyone else who might have something to say about her appearance.
She captioned the photo with "So just one thing": "If you have an opinion regarding my body, please, don't tell me." A picture of her in a floral print dress with a white collar was captioned. While most people are nice and not trying be offensive, I am one real person and it is really difficult to bear the weight of thousands upon thousands of opinions about how you look every day.
Coughlan stated, "If you have an opinion on me that's okay, I understand that I'm on television and that people will think and speak but I beg of you not to send that directly."
This isn't the first time Nicola asked people not to make comments about her appearance. In March 2021, the former "Derry Girls” star shared an opinion piece she had written two years earlier asking journalists to refrain from asking questions about her appearance during interviews.
She wrote that she asked women to stop asking about their weight in interviews. Coughlan said that although many people may feel that asking women about their weight is outdated, she informed her followers that these inappropriate questions continue to be asked.
She stated that "every time I'm asked about how my body feels in an interview, it makes me deeply uneasy and so sad that I'm not allowed to talk about the job I love." It's so negative for women to be asked about their bodies in interviews, even though we are making great strides towards diversity in the arts. But questions like these just make us look backwards.
She reminded her followers, aged 35, that she doesn't consider herself to be a body-positive activist. She said that she uses her body to tell stories, and not let it define her.
It's 2021, so it would be great if we didn’t have to continue having this conversation. It would be great to not have to ask about it again in an interview, and I also have many other topics I love talking about, I'm Irish so you can talk until the cows come home," Nicola said.
