Britney Spears Defends Book, Says It Wasn't Meant to 'Offend Anyone' or 'Harp on My Past' Amid Press Coverage

She made her new statement after news stories about Justin Timberlake and Colin Farrell as well as her family had already been making headlines in the lead up to the release of this book.

Britney's new memoir the Woman in Me is still generating major press coverage, even before its official release. The singer has addressed how the major revelations are already being discussed in the media.

Spears, who posted a message on her Instagram page Friday morning, was insistent that the goal of her memoir is "not to offend anybody by any means."

She continued by saying that "even though some may be offended, I have closure on everything for a better tomorrow." Her motive in writing the article "wasn't to harp back on my past experience which is what is done by the press and it is dumb and silly!!! Since then, I have moved forward !!!"

"That was me back then...that is the past!" Spears wrote: "I don't like reading the headlines... it's the exact reason I left the business four years ago." "Most the book dates back 20 years ago... It's time to move on. !!!"

She said she hopes the book will "enlighten others" who have felt "particularly alone" or "hurt or misunderstood", as well. And that her stories in the book are "the last of it" and "s--t does happen."

Spears said that she also "didn't realize" the need to write the memoir.

Hilarie Burton, One Tree Hill alumnus, was one of the many Britney fans who stood up for her and her book. She wrote, "You deserve your truth." "

Spears made her statement after excerpts from the book were leaked to PEOPLE, Time and The New York Times. The New York Times had obtained a copy before its official release.
