Britney Spears was put under conservatorship a decade ago. This conservatorship controlled Britney's career, money spending, and even her ability to drive her own car. 2021 was the result of years of struggle to escape the conservatorship her father Jamie had placed on Britney Spears.
Jamie was already her primary conservator by the start of the year and Britney was fighting against his selection to be her co-conservator. She didn't win the 2020 vote to have him removed, but her personal choice was chosen to be her co-conservator. This was her first win that would end her conservatorship.

"I won't go into detail because I have always respected your privacy, but at the same moment, I didn’t come here to be unable to express my opinion or freedom," Sam wrote.
Jamie Declares He Wants to End Conservatorship
Vivan Lee Thoreen (Jamie's attorney) revealed in March that Britney's father wanted to end the conservatorship. Although he acknowledged that he wasn’t the perfect dad and didn’t always see Britney’s best interests, he said that he made all decisions for her.

Britney and me have not spoken in over two years. Britney informed me that she would be taking a long-term hiatus from work. I found out that Britney had announced her intention to retire earlier today. As you all know, I have not been involved in the conservatorship or its operations so I don't know much. I believe Britney is best served by me being her manager. My professional services are no longer required. This is my formal resignation. We have achieved so much together over the past 25 years.
