Emma Hemming Wills confessed that she was frightened by the research on Bruce Willis degenerative condition, in the days immediately following Bruce's FTD diagnosis.
Emma Heming Willis had to admit that she initially struggled with the diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration in her husband Bruce Willis.
In the latest episode in Emma's Make Time To ConnectYouTube Series, the 45-year old mom and model talked to Maria Kent Beers, founder of the Remember Me Podcast, and Rachael Martnez, who have both cared for parents with FTD.
Emma, who spoke to Bruce and Emma, recalled how she discovered the podcast shortly after Bruce's diagnosis.
Emma and other family members revealed in February that Bruce, a 68-year old actor, would be taking a break from acting due to his degenerative condition.
Emma confessed, "I had no idea where to start, what to search for, and I'm searching things, but it's making me nervous."
Emma thanked Beers and Martinez for connecting her to families with loved ones who suffer from the disease. She said that after listening to their podcast, she began to see a path forward.
She told them, "There was not much [information about FTD] and you guys came up." "I started to listen and I felt, 'Oh my god I'm so thankful to hear other peoples' stories.'
Emma shared with listeners how she has turned to other caregivers in this difficult time. She told them that having people "who get it" around is a comforting and supportive thing.
FTD is the only thing that can level the playing field. She told them, "I have formed some of the best relationships with other caregivers who are like you. You just get it." There doesn't need to be as much explanation.
Emma continued: "You all have been so helpful." "I want to thank you."
The mother of two was emotional, even though she did not cry. She stressed how important it is to have these lifelines in the face of Bruce's illness.
She added, "I'm amazed I'm not tearing up because that's what I do when I think about people who've been my lifeline."
Emma's comments are just a few weeks after her first interview following Bruce's diagnosis of dementia.
Emma stated that "Dementia can be hard" during an appearance on Today last month. It's not just hard for the person with dementia, but also the family. It's no different for Bruce or me or our daughters. "When they say that this is a disease of the family, it is."
Emma, who appeared in the morning show as part of World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week to kick-off, said that it is often "hard" to tell if the Die Hard star knows what he is going through.
Emma called the diagnosis "a blessing and a curse" as it allowed her to understand and accept her husband's suffering.
She said, "It's not any less painful but being in acceptance and knowing what is happening to Bruce, makes it a bit easier."
