She also spoke out about how difficult it was to make Mad Max Fury Road.
Hollywood is not known for its guaranteed hits. Charlize Theron, however, knew that her film would fail at the box-office "from the beginning."
The 47-year old Oscar-winner spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about why she chose to do "Arrested Development" instead of "Monster", and also named one of her box-office bombs.
It was one of the most terrifying things to be able to step onto a set that's so well-constructed and brilliant. Charlize shared that she needed this to be able to stand out from the crowd. People thought I was depressing and like my mother who shot my father." "And I just loved that show, so this is going to make me sound so poor me', but I feel like sometimes, women, we only get one shot, and I knew that ’Aeon Flux’ was going to be a failure."
She said, "I knew it right from the beginning, that's what I did 'Arrested development'."
Theron stated that she did not know how to fix the film at the time. The film was based on an MTV anime series. She added, "I knew we were in trouble."
She continued to state that she did not have the experience or knowledge to do "what Tom Cruise may have said over the past 20-years, which was, 'Shut down this s---, get four additional writers on it, and let's figure out this.'
She said that "no one had told me that was an possibility."
She also spoke about the difficult production of Mad Max: Fury Road, during which Charlize was notoriously at odds with her costar Tom Hardy. The film was directed and produced by George Miller. Theron admitted that she never really appreciated or respected his vision until she saw the final film.
She recalled the "long, tedious shoot" and said that she was aware of what she had said. She called the shoot "f---ing difficult."
Miller wrapped a prequel recently with Anya TaylorJoy, who Charlize called "one of the most f---ing actresses out right now" -- as Furiosa. THR reported that she was not mad about the prequel approach and added that Taylor-Joy had not reached out to her regarding the project prior to filming.
"But, I get that. It can be tricky. It's not easy to just pick up the phone and tell someone, "Theron said. "No one wants that. That's why I completely get it. George is my favorite. I know that I will talk to George again. It was too difficult, I believe."
