Cheryl Burke Reveals Maks Chmerkovskiy Has Apologized for Fat Shaming Her, Says There's Still No Closure

Cheryl Burke Reveals Maks Chmerkovskiy Has Apologized for Fat Shaming Her, Says There's Still No Closure

"He apologized when the whole thing occurred years ago... I'm not sure if the matter is resolved. It's not because he said anything. "It goes back to my dance and competition career," Cheryl Burke said about being fat-shamed during the height of 'Dancing With the Stars,' back in 2008.

Cheryl Burke still struggles to process some of the trauma that she suffered on Dancing with the Stars.

Burke revealed to the New York Post that Chermkovskiy had since apologized for his behavior.

He apologized to me and my mother years ago, when the whole thing happened. Burke said that Chmerkovskiy apologized to him and his mother. "But, look at it. Is there closure?" I'm not sure if the case is closed. It's not because he said anything. "It goes back to my dance and competition career."

"This is a problem because I'm a curvy woman and that's the way it has always been," she continued. I cannot change the location of my hips or bones. It's what it is. Either I accept it, or I don't. It's difficult to accept when your entire life has been focused on that.

Burke explained that she must find closure in herself at the end of the days to heal some of these wounds.

Burke continued, "I must love myself and the body God has blessed me with in order to achieve that."

Burke stated that body-shaming began when she was paired up with Drew Lachey during Season 2, as the show reached its peak.

"It was at its peak." "It was pretty much at its peak." And I danced with Drew Lachey [who] who was my first partner. This was during the divorce of Nick [Lachey] from Jessica [Simpson]. It was then that people began to come in and take a look at me. You can't do anything about it because you were growing up on television. She told the Post, "I started when I turned 21. Your hormones change and I gained some weight."

"I'm a fan of the seasons, and I believe it was Season 7 or 8, right before I met Gilles Marini. I will never forget the attention that the tabloids gave me, with headlines like "Is she fat enough for television?" All these terrible comments. It wasn't only me. Lacey Schwimmer was there at the same time. "And then there were some of these professional dancers who agreed with it."

Burke continued, "The messages that we send out in our society are not necessarily healthy." "I believe we are slowly moving in the right direction. I believe we are slowly improving. "But it's important to show that in action, not just words."

The dancer made her comments just weeks after Chmerkovskiy was a guest of her show. They discussed the long-running series of competitions and its impact on celebrities, in particular.

We don't have any dietitians or other professionals on our show. We need this! It's stress. Some people eat more when stressed. Others don't. Some people also lose sleep when stressed. Burke said, "It's the schedule." You cannot take a day off from the show. What anyone says doesn't matter to me. You can do it at first, during your training, but you're doing so at your own peril."

She said, "Yes, I think you can practice five days, or three days per week. If you want to be able to compete with your competitors, and they are practicing seven days a weeks, and you can, you will choose to do that. With that stress comes a lot more calories burnt... and the intake is not high. It is a shock to the system, especially for people who have never done this kind of exercise before.

Burke's advice to future contestants is that they should "enjoy the ride". This goes for both celebs and dance professionals.

It goes fast. It is important to understand the whole show. It's not only about the dance competition. It's about being vulnerable to celebrities, in particular. My advice is to just be vulnerable. "Let it all hang loose," she said.

Burke continued, "I believe people enjoy seeing people struggle. If you are not struggling and everything is all fun and peaches at rehearsals, then we know this is not the real thing as an audience member at home. Don't worry if you have a conflict every now and then, it's perfectly normal. You are completely vulnerable, and you do this in front millions of people each night. "That can't be simple."
