Chicago 6-year-old boy forced into cold showers by hypothermia: Prosecutors

After his partially frozen and partially burned body was discovered, his mother was arrested for murder.

Prosecutors have claimed that a Chicago 6-year-old boy reported missing by his family was murdered by them.

FBI agents found the naked body of Damari Perry wrapped in a bag in a trash can near an abandoned house, Indiana, on Saturday. His internal organs had been partially frozen while his body was partially burned.

An autopsy was performed Monday and determined that hypothermia was the cause of death. The coroner declared it a homicide.

Jannie Parry (38), his mother and two of his siblings were charged with the death.

His mother and his brother Jeremiah Perry, aged 20 years old, reported the boy missing on January 5. They claimed that his 16-year old sister had driven him to a party and taken him there with a man/woman. According to the sister, she claimed she had drunk a lot at the party, fell asleep and then realized that her brother and the man had gone.

Prosecutors call this version of events now "completely false."

Kyle Doyle, Lake County Assistant State's attorney, stated that the boy had "done something that his mother felt the need to be punished for". He was then placed in a cold bath for an "extended time" during a court hearing.

Doyle stated that Damari vomited, became unresponsive and finally died. However, no one in the family called 911 to get medical help.

Instead, Damari's brother and mother discussed what to do. They drove the body to Indiana to burn and dump it before creating the party story, according to the prosecution.

According to the Lake County Coroner's Office Damari's body had bruising on his legs and a "extremely cold core temperature" with partially frozen internal organs, NBC Chicago reported. Also, the body showed signs of "postmortem thermal injury/charring", which indicates that someone attempted to burn it.

Jannie Parry was charged for first-degree murder, concealment a homicidal killing and obstruction of justice.

Jeremiah Perry was accused of aggravated battery causing severe bodily harm to a minor child under 12 years old, concealing a murder and obstructing justice.

Another juvenile sibling was also charged with concealing the body of the boy; their identities have not been released due to their age.

After complaining of being sick, the mother was not due to appear in court on Sunday. Instead, she was taken to hospital and placed in police custody.

She was released from court on Wednesday and was placed under $5million bail. Her elder son is being held on a $3million bond.

Eric Rinehart, Lake County States Attorney, said that "our hearts ache over Damari Perry's murder." We would not have known the terrible truth of this case without FBI - Federal Bureau of Investigation and North Chicago Police Department. Thanks to the FBI and Lake County Children's Advocacy Center investigators, we could not have.

"Now, thanks to their thorough and detailed investigation, it will be possible for us to get justice for Damari in courtroom."
