"The fear that I won’t be able remember my life, my wife or my children, is my greatest fear.
Chris Hemsworth is currently learning more about his health.
The actor, as shown in a "GMA” clip from "Limitless," discovers that he is at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Hemsworth, 39 years old, meets with Dr. Peter Attia (a "longevity specialist") and takes a blood test. He discovered that he had "two copies" a gene that could put him at a higher chance of developing Alzheimer's.
Hemsworth was told by Dr. Attia that they had done every blood test possible and that you now have two copies APOE4 -- one from your mom, and one from your dad. This means that you are at higher risk for Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Attia answered the question of "Thor" star "How much higher" was "Probably somewhere between 8 and 10 times greater than the general population."
Hemsworth admitted that he was shocked by the information and said that "the idea of me not being able to recall the life I have lived or my wife, my children, is probably my greatest fear."
The National Institute of Aging reports that APOE4, or the apolipoprotein-E gene, is the "strongest risk gene for Alzheimer's disease." According to the NIA, about 25% of people carry one copy of the gene while only 23% and 3% have two.
Host George Stephanopoulos, in the "GMA's” segment on Thursday, noted that the Alzheimer's Association cautions against genetic testing because a positive test doesn't mean you'll get Alzheimer's. It can also cause people unnecessarily to worry.
Stephanopoulos said, "But making healthy decisions can reduce risk later on in life."
Dr. Peter Attia mentioned the same idea during his conversation with Hemsworth. He stated, "It is my belief that if you take every step possible we can reduce your chance of falling prey to anyone else."
While appearing on Thursday's episode, "GMA," the "Avengers: Endgame” star contemplated the results of the genetic testing while reflecting on them.
Hemsworth said, "It quickly became another wonderful motivator to make some changes to arm myself with all of the tools I need to live a healthier and better life."
"I believe that any motivation to live better can come in many forms. This was, you know. Whatever I do now to protect my brain health will benefit all aspects of my health.
In the "Limitless", episode titled "Memory," Hemsworth took a walk in the wilderness with his friend without any GPS or map. He relied only on his memory to navigate the way. The "Thor: Love and Thunder” actor shared his story about his grandfather's struggle with Alzheimer's while sitting around a campfire with his friend.
Hemsworth stated that Hemsworth doesn't know who they are. He knows his grandkids, but he also forgets his own children. "It's heartbreaking."
Disney+ reports that Hemsworth embarks on a personal mission to "expand our intelligence, health, and strength further into our later years."
The six-part series features an Australian native "undergoing a series dreadful trials and extraordinary challenges to understand the limits and capabilities of the human body." To "learn firsthand how to live better for longer, discover ways to maximize strength, regenerate damage, increase resilience, boost memory, and face death," the series is made up of six episodes.
"Limitless” is now available on Disney+
