Costco employee earns $30/hour for drawing smiley faces on receipts. Sparks heated debate about fair pay

The internet quickly formed opinions when a Costco employee posted her hourly wages via TikTok. Some thought she was making too much. Some people were pleased that a large corporation such as Costco would pay its employees so well.

This seemingly innocent video reveals a problem that has plagued the American labor market for centuries: wage disparity.

Many users are now asking about TikTok's virality and who is entitled to high wages.

Does Costco Pay Too Much?

Natalie wrote the caption to her TikTok video, "And it is union... gotta LOVE Costco." Natalie and her coworker danced to Costco music. Natalie claims that she made $29.50 just to draw smiling faces on receipts.

NPR reports that the national minimum wage average is $11.80 in May 2019. Natalie seems to be living in California where the minimum wage is $11.80 an hour.

One TikTok user complained that he was overpaid and underskilled. A user from the medical field also added that he was out there saving lives. You put smiley faces on paper. We all make the same salary... it makes sense."

Others were still supportive of Costco’s hourly wages. One user said, "I love Costco because of this reason." It also shows that employees are paid well. They are all happy to work, and they seem super friendly.

Another user said that people mad at her earning $29/hr are the exact same people who believe they should be getting $200k per year.

Who is to Blame?

Many users were upset by Natalie's statement that Costco employees shouldn't be paid more than other workers in fields such as education or health care. Is it possible that a shortage of fair wages is caused by employees at wholesale stores?

One Tiktok user-no says they are not. The user stated that this happens all the time. "People working in certain fields believe they should make more than those who work in 'easier jobs' like retail, food service or any other.

They add, "If you feel it's unfair that this person and you get the same salary," they say, "maybe you should be upset at your employer rather than another working-class person."

Retail Workers Get Better Pay

TikTok user @mothsfield elaborated on this argument in a follow up video. “The central point to this argument is that everyone deserves to get paid more,” they begin. “The point isn’t that those people are stupid for complaining. They’re aiming in the wrong direction.”

"When you put down retail and service workers, it furthers the agenda that upper classes want to push. That is, they aren't responsible for your suffering. Other people in your situation or similar are."

They continue: "When people realise that we shouldn't be blaming each other, they should blame their bosses and owners, CEOs, and insurance adjusters--they will be in big trouble." "People will continue to punch each other until then."

Most Americans work in the lower or middle classes. American workers have the highest level of commonality across all classes.

We shouldn't be bitter about the workers making good money. Instead, we should be proud of it, support them and fight for better wages.
