U2 is expected to perform a Las Vegas residency 2023. Larry Mullen Jr. (band's drummer) has stated that he will not be performing in the band. It remains to be seen if Mullen will still participate in the residency.
The drummer revealed that he will not be attending U2's residency in Las Vegas at the new Las Vegas Sphere opening this fall, during an interview with the Washington Post. The drummer is in need of surgery. The 61-year old musician is not planning to play with the band next year.
In seven years, the media-shy founder of the band has not given interviews. Mullen spoke only to the Washington Post after he was and three other members of the band were awarded a Kennedy Center Honors lifetime achievement award. Mullen's article is only paraphrased. It is clear, however, that Mullen is currently undergoing surgery which could put him out of commission.

Geoff Edgers wrote the article. He said that Mullen is "blunt", and "says that if the band plays in 2023 it will likely be without him, because he needs surgery for continuing playing." Unfortunately, the article doesn't give any details about the type of surgery needed by the drummer. Mullen spoke out about the surgery, apparently without any questions about his physical conditions.
Mullen Isn't Leaving U2
Edgers shared some additional details from the interview after posting the article. The writer also shared several quotes from the drummer in a Twitter thread.
Edgers tweeted that "[Mullen] stated that he was told in the past to rest, get work done, and take time off." He instead pushed himself to do his best. He doesn't want to do that now. He wants to solve his problems. Because he loves to drum again.
Mullen insists that drumming is an absolute must. Mullen wants to continue playing drumming, so he is now able to concentrate on healing. The drummer stated, "I really miss my audiences." Even though I am behind the drum kit, I miss that interaction. My body isn't what it was physically.
Mullen explained that "I have many bits falling off, elbows knees necks, necks and so during COVID when we weren’t playing, I had a chance to look at some of them. There's some damage.
The drummer admitted that he wouldn't perform live next year. I don't know the band's plans. There are many things being discussed.
It seems that Mullen will not be the band's drummer, even if U2 has the residency. Mullen, who is a founding member of the band, wants to be there for his fans. Hopefully, he will make a quick return to the group. Mullen and his fans will be blessed with a wonderful day.
