Dan Levy Opens Up About Facing Homophobia Hosting Canada's 'MTV Live' in 2006

Dan Levy Opens Up About Facing Homophobia Hosting Canada's 'MTV Live' in 2006

"It was a lot like, 'Conform the culture of your workplace or sit it out.

Dan Levy, who started his career over 15 years ago, says that we have made great strides in LGBTQ+ acceptance.

During a appearance on "Phone a Friend" with Jessi Cruickshank, the 39-year old "Schitt’s Creek" actor recalled how he felt "not particularly free" being openly gay while hosting MTV Canada's 2006 "MTV Live".

Jessi Cruickshank, podcast host and Levy co-hosted "The After Show" and the program. Although Levy was not involved in personal affairs, the Emmy Award-winning four-time winner said he didn't work in a friendly workplace.

It was almost like saying, "Conform to the culture at work or leave it alone." He explained that it wasn't like "Conform to the culture of your workplace or sit it out."

Levy said that she distinctly remembers walking into work and being asked what her weekend was like. "I replied, "Well, I installed an apartment dimmer switch." "I said, "Well, I installed a dimmer switch in my apartment." That person replied, "Wow, it almost seems like you're real man."

Although he felt "this isn’t right... at that time, there wasn’t sensitivity and nobody to turn to because it was different time."

The "Big Brunch” star opened up about his fear of starting a career as an openly homosexual man in entertainment.

"Will it make a difference in my career?" What about the job opportunities? What will that do to my career as an actor? He wondered then, noting that "not a lot of out actors were thriving and drowning with work".

Levy also noted that gossip blogs "[made] them their job to outpeople without their consent, as if it were some kind of news responsibility."

He said, "We didn’t have the sensitivity I think that we do now. At least, around people coming out, and the fact it’s an incredibly personal event." "I think it was something we all knew at the time.

Dan added, "So, when it feels like there's a hunt to find gay people of note, it almost makes one want to hide more because they don't want any attention to themselves."
