Daniel Craig Wasn't Sexy Enough, Worried Casino Royale Director

Daniel Craig Wasn't Sexy Enough, Worried Casino Royale Director

It was because they all looked like traditional Bonds. All of them were handsome, sexy and very attractive to women.

Even the director of Casino Royale, who was the first to see Daniel Craig as James Bond in James Bond, had doubts back in the early 2000s.

Five films as 007 have cemented his place in the canon.

Martin Campbell, the director of Royale, admitted that he was worried Craig wasn't handsome enough to play the role coveted by Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

Campbell recently admitted to having doubts when he spoke with Express UK.

The director, who had directed a Brosnan film, GoldenEye, in 1995, was returning to this universe to launch a new era of Bond.

Campbell said: "My only hesitation with Daniel...he really was a fantastic actor, no doubt about it." "It's the fact that people like Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan were all traditional Bonds. All of them were handsome, sexy and very attractive to women.

He said that Daniel was "obviously tougher and more rugged" but not a typical handsome guy. "I just thought about it for a moment and aside from that, I can say that it was him."

Campbell then recalled that eight people were in the running for the role of Bond following Brosnan’s final farewell, 2002’s Die Another Day.

He said that the process of selecting the next Bond was "very democratic". "You all sit at a table...it was me, the producers, casting directors, etc. You go through all eight people, and as you speak to each one you raise your hand. Ultimately everyone must be unanimous.

Henry Cavillwas also in the running, but as Campbell had previously stated they felt that "he looked a bit young back then."

Debbie McWilliams , a long-time casting director for 007, noted in 2021 the fans' concerns about Craig taking on the role of the beloved character. Casino Royale was released in theaters and most, if not all, doubts were removed about Craig's ability to carry on the franchise, but also redefine it.

Craig's five movie run as Bond ended with 2021's No Time to Die -- a new Bond is yet to be announced.
