"Oh, f ---, just stole the police car!" One officer exclaims, before the high-speed pursuit ends with a vehicle careening towards a truck that ignites in flames.
A Colorado man used one of the authorities' cruisers to lead them on a deadly high-speed chase.
The fatal incident took place on June 20. Bodycam and dashcam videos were released the following week.
The video shows Otero County deputies following a man, later identified as Anthony Alphonso Sanchez III (31), after responded to a report of shots fired.
The officers are seen forcing the car off the road before handcuffing him and placing him into the back of the Colorado State Trooper cruiser. Authorities searched the car in the back and found a gun.
Sanchez can be seen in the backseat mumbling in his head, then wriggling in order to remove his handcuffs from behind him and put them in front of his face. He squeezes himself into the front of the cruiser and then drives away.
"Oh f---! "He just stole the police car!" As the vehicle speeds away, one of the responders shouts.
Dashcam recordings continue to be made as Sanchez is heard saying "Oh, s ---!" The pursuit continued throughout. He can hear the other troopers talking over the radio, including one who said "suspect has just stolen a CST Patrol car", and another who pointed out that there was a rifle in the vehicle.
The authorities finally try to stop the vehicle using "stop sticks", but they are unsuccessful on their first two attempts. Sanchez did hit it on the third attempt, however. Dashcam footage from the cruiser shows him losing control before crashing into a semi truck parked nearby. The video ends at the time of impact.
The vehicle was on fire when the troopers who were pursuing arrived at the scene. Following the accident, the semi's trailer had also tipped.
In an additional video uploaded by FOX ( below), the responding officers put out the flames before trying to remove the suspect, who was conscious and alive. On the scene, one officer was heard saying that Sanchez seemed to have suffered a head trauma.
Sanchez was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The truck driver was not injured.
According to KOAA the Colorado Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation. The Colorado State Patrol trooper who had his vehicle stolen was placed on administrative leave but cleared to return to the job. KOAA reports an ongoing investigation to determine if any disciplinary actions will be taken against this trooper.
