Drew Barrymore and Shania Twain Bond Over Moms Taking Them to Nightclubs as Kids: 'I Paid a Price For It'

Drew Barrymore, a country singer, spoke with Shania Twain about her life as a young child star and the trauma of being exposed to drinking at a young age.

Shania Twain is a musician who has been around since she was young. But she hasn't always been a success.

In a clip of The Drew Barrymore Show season 4 premiere on Monday, Drew Barrymore spoke with the country singer about their careers and fame, as well as being exposed to the pitfalls of the business at a young.

Barrymore and Twain shared memories of their childhoods. Barrymore recalled how her mother brought her to nightclubs when she was a child. She felt "pressure" to keep working because she feared her family would not be able support itself. This led her to ask Twain about her experience.

Twain explained that "growth means you are moving from one level to another of maturity or education." "I think I became a bit broken." If you're eight years old and you have an adult and drunk people all over you -- it is very unnatural.

She said, "I was loving what I did." I loved music so I was torn. I was a music lover and thought that if I wanted to be a musician, this was the way I should do it. Certain personalities may not be able to cope with it. "I feel fortunate that I was able to cope with it."

Twain continued, "But I had to pay a price."

Barrymore also spoke about the challenges she faced as a teenager, including having to care for herself.

Barrymore said, "I was emancipated when I was 14 years old. I got my first apartment at that age and left." "I spent two years in an institution. I thought, "I have to leave this place and find another path." "I had to look after myself so young."

She said, "My biggest wish is to finally stop being so angry and disappointed about the way I raised myself and to stop criticizing my parenting." "But I had no choice because I was forced to."

Twain said that she didn't feel bad about having to take care of her and her siblings when she was 10 years old. She told Barrymore, it is understandable she would have been a "terrible mother" at the age of 10.

The "Man! The "I Feel Like a Woman'" singer added that such experiences prompted her to risk her career and life.

"You never know what lies on the other side." Twain stated that you don't know the depth of the water when you jump into it. You will make it through whatever happens. When you open your eyelids, you realize that you have accomplished something. I went through the fear threshold. I actually passed the fear threshold.

She continued, "It does not matter what you find on the other side." "It's more important that you took the leap."

Barrymore didn't address the controversy surrounding her show's return during the writers strike that was still ongoing at the time. The strike has since been ended.

The Drew Barrymore Show is broadcast on CBS during the weekdays.
