Drew Barrymore Says Therapist Quit Over Her Drinking Habits Post-Divorce

The talk show host said that he just said, "I can't handle this anymore," and recalled what Barry Michels, her psychotherapist, had told her.

Drew Barrymore reflects on how alcoholism impacted her after her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman.

The Los Angeles Times spoke with the talk-show host, who previously talked about her drinking habits to "numb" the pain of her divorce. Barry Michels, her therapist for 10 years, revealed that she had quit her job because of her excessive drinking.

Barrymore, 48, said that he just said, "I can't handle this anymore," recalling her conversation to Michels. It was all about my drinking. I replied, "I get it. You are the most respected person I have ever met. You see I'm not getting better. "I hope that one day I can earn your trust again.

After four years of marriage, Kopeman and host "The Drew Barrymore Show," divorced in 2016. They have two daughters, Olive, 10 and Frankie 8, respectively.

Barrymore stated that she started drinking to cope with the split. She told the LA Times she had struggled to adjust to moving from Los Angeles to New York after the move. Her depression and the guilt of letting her daughters down led to her drinking, as well as an increase in her alcohol consumption.

The actress' friends, like her therapist, became frustrated by Barrymore's post-divorce drinking and confronted Barrymore.

Cameron Diaz, the star's friend and longtime confidante, said that she witnessed her friend go through such a difficult time and told the LA Times it was "difficult" to watch.

She said, "But I knew that she would find her way if we all stayed with her and gave her the support needed," She is my absolute faith. It's hard to imagine how difficult it was for her to be a child. But then, she jumped out of the other end with the ability and will to save herself."

Barrymore did not make any real changes until 2019, when she was offered the opportunity to host her Emmy-nominated daytime talk program, "The Drew Barrymore Show."

She recalled that she felt the chance to attend a show like this "really hit" her. "I was like, ‘I can’t handle this unless i’m in a really clear space.'

"Charlie's Angels'" star said that she didn't stop drinking but doesn't consider herself "sober".

"I was thinking, "I'll master it." It'll be easy. Finally, I realized that you have never master this skill, and you will never master it." She added, "I don’t want to stay stuck."

Barrymore reached out and began working with the psychoanalyst two years after Michels left her.

According to the "Scream" star, she was devastated when her daughters left for summer camp last summer. She called Michels who told her Olive and Frankie that they were fine.

"This isn't me being a bad mother. Barrymore reflected, "This is not my childhood." "There is a lot of stuff that I need to get through."

Despite all the hard work she has ahead of her, the actress from "Ever After" appears optimistic thanks to her job as well as her daughters.

Barrymore stated to the LA Times that "my worth has been so wrapped in this job, this life, because I've received so much," "Just me and my girls made me happy, and I realized it. I had always believed I would be stuck on the hamster wheel my whole life. Maybe there will be something else before the lights go out.
