Elisabeth Fritzl, Now that she's free? An Update for 2022

Austrian newspapers feature on March 16, 2009 front pages on the trial of Austrian Josef Fritzl, 73, who is charged with having locked up and raped his daughter Elisabeth for 24 years in a cellar of his home, fathering seven children with her. The trial on charges of incest, rape and murder opened on March 16 in Sankt Poelten, some 80 kms west of Vienna.

Josef Fritzl, an Austrian father, asked Elizabeth to help him install a new door into their newly renovated basement in Amstetten. Josef Fritzl forced Elisabeth to turn away and placed an ether-soaked cloth around her mouth until she lost consciousness. She was kept in that basement for the next 24 years starting at 18 years old. Elisabeth was subject to unimaginable horrors while in captivity by her father. Where is Elisabeth Fritzl now in 2022? 14 years since she was released from prison.

Quick Review Of Her Horrifying Capture

Elisabeth Fritzl disappeared on August 28, 1984. Rosemarie Fritzl, her mother, filed an immediate missing-persons report. Elisabeth was not seen or heard from for several weeks before a letter arrived. Elisabeth wrote that she was fed up with her home life and wanted to run away. Josef, her father, said that Elisabeth had previously expressed an interest in joining religious cults. Josef said that this was his best guess of where she had gone. Josef knew more about her location than he revealed. He was in fact the one who actually wrote the letter, purportedly from Elisabeth. He kept her in his basement.

Elisabeth was bound by an iron chain for the first two days. She was then unable to move. Josef began to sexually assault her on the second day. The abuse continued for two and a quarter decades. Elisabeth was able to bear seven of her father’s children. Josef burned the body of one child, who died shortly after the birth.

Three of Elisabeth’s children were kept in captivity in her cellar. They never saw daylight again until their release. Josef made the three remaining children disappear outside the house, in the bushes and on the doorstep. The notes that Elisabeth had written were allegedly planted by Josef. They claimed that Elisabeth couldn't take care of these children and wanted them to be raised by her parents. The three children were able to enjoy the outside world, while their siblings were trapped in the basement. They feared that the door would be smashed and they would die if they tried to escape.

Josef was able to keep Elisabeth's and the location of the children secret throughout all these years. He wrote notes to Elisabeth that she could send to her mother. He claimed he was at work when he spent his time in the basement. He also blamed the noises emanating from the basement's soundproofed structure on his noisy heating and pipes.

How she finally got free

Elisabeth, 42 years old, finally gained her freedom on April 26, 2008. Kerstin, her 19-year old daughter, fell ill. Josef took the unusually kind decision to drive Kerstin into the hospital because of her dire circumstances. Soon after, Elisabeth and her sons saw Kerstin’s doctors on television. They asked her mother for information to save her life.

Elisabeth begged Kerstin to allow her to leave. Josef was already looking for a way to escape the terrible situation he had created. He was growing old and tired living his miserable double life. He was willing to let Elisabeth go. She told police she was able to get to the hospital and that she would tell them all the details as long as her father wasn't around.

Lifetime presented an original movie in 2021 based on Fritzl's case, Girl In the Basement.

Josef was arrested immediately after Elisabeth was released. Josef is now 86 years old and is currently in prison, where he has been serving an eternity sentence since 2009.

Although Elisabeth is now in the 50s, her most recent photograph was taken when she was 16. In an effort to give Elisabeth a normal life after her horrific experiences, authorities have gone to great lengths not to reveal her identity to the public. Since her release, she has assumed a new name and is currently living in Austrian village called "Village X". This hides its exact location.

Elisabeth resides with her three children, who now range in age from 19 to 33. Therapy has been used to help her children get over their traumas. They still sleep with their bedroom doors open.

The two-story house is surrounded by security guards who watch it from a constant CCTV camera. Although little information is available about Elisabeth's post-incarceration life, reports in 2019 claimed that Elisabeth had "found love" with her bodyguard.
