Ellie Goulding has spoken out about the negative impact rumors that she cheated with One Direction singer Niall Horan on her career.

Rumours began in 2014 when some speculated that Sheeran's song, "Don't", about an unknown singer who steps out on him and another artist, was about Goulding with Horan. She claimed that she had been on "a few dates with Niall" but never dated Ed.

In December 2022, rumors surfaced again when one of her TikTok followers commented on one her TikToks, writing, "Can't believe you cheated on Ed with niall, but slay fr." She replied, "False !!!!!." She also slay."

In a new interview, she said that she thought she was drunk when she wrote the sentence. It's amazing how many people are interested. It was nine years ago. It caused me a lot of stress, but that is just my honest opinion. It actually caused me a lot trauma."

Sheeran was reportedly the only one she dated. Sheeran then allegedly stressed that they never had a relationship, before speaking out about her private life.

"How old were you, 23 years? It is amazing to see how my friends have spent their 20s with flings, one-night stands, and the private life that every 20-something goes through. She said that every single thing she did was documented. "I felt terrible and that made me feel bad about myself. I don't know how to deal with it."

Although she admitted she can laugh about it, she stated that the rumors had "changed things" in her life and career.

"I was a reclusive person. I didn't want the responsibility of performing. She added that she wrote the comment because she receives comments every day about her stupid teenage situation. It was nothing, it was private. I was so upset about it.

She also stated to the outlet that Sheeran and she are good friends, and that whatever happened between them is "in their past."
