Extremely Rare Baby Giraffe Born Without Spots in Tennessee — Zoo Wants Help Naming Her!

She is one of the few solid-colored giraffes recorded in history

A Tennessee Zoo has welcomed a baby giraffe that is unique. It doesn't even have spots.

David Bright, director of Brights Zoo, in Limestone, , spoke to GMA, , where he stated that the spotless Giraffe was a "definitely shock."

Bright continued, "This is the first without a pattern." He also said that giraffe spots usually develop in the womb.

Three other babies have been born who look exactly like her. The last was born in Tokyo, Japan [in] 1973. Bright shared that the one prior to that occurred four years earlier, in Tokyo again, with the same mother, and that one in Uganda was before that.

Zoo officials believe that this giraffe "is the only solid-colored, reticulated Giraffe on Earth."

The young giraffe, which is only 22 days old, is healthy and is expected to grow healthy.

The zoo's director explained that "[as] we do with all of our newborn giraffe calves, we have vets draw blood at 24 hours. We then repeat this at 48 hours to determine where the calf is on the chart." All of her blood tests came back excellent. "That means we can be sure that she is healthy."

On their Facebook page, the zoo has even started a poll to choose the name for the young giraffe. The four Swahili names are up for voting until the 4th of September.

1. Kipekee - Unique

2. Firali: Unusual or Extraordinary

3. Shakiri is the most beautiful woman

4. Jamella - A woman of great beauty

Bright hopes the attention that this brings will inspire people to become involved in the conservation of Giraffes.

Bright said, "Our initial thought was that this would be great for conservation."

This will bring enough attention to giraffes that we hope more people can be involved in supporting the giraffe conservation network that is out there doing work in nature to protect this species.
