Fake Heiress Anna Delvey Launches Netflix Series about Her from Jail and Says That She Won’t Be Watching

"Nothing about seeing a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal-insane-asylum setting sounds appealing to me."

Anna Sorokin (AKA Anna Delvey) doesn't intend to watch "Inventing Anna", the Netflix original series about her infamous fraud in which she claimed to be a German heiress.

The 31-year old convicted fraudster was in ICE custody and faces deportation. Insider received an essay from her. She discussed her time in prison, as well as her thoughts about the upcoming Netflix series.

Delvey stated that "Inventing Anna" doesn't seem like a movie I will be seeing anytime soon. "Even if I were to pull some strings and make it happen, nothing about seeing a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal-insane-asylum setting sounds appealing to me."

She continued, "For a while, I hoped that by the time Inventing Anna came out, it would have been over with." The show was supposed to be the end of a long chapter.

Julia Garner stars as Sorokin in "Inventing Anna", which follows a journalist, Anna Chlumsk, as she investigates Sorokin’s grift in the New York City social scenes. Based on Jessica Pressler's New York Magazine article "How Anna (Sorokin), Delvey Tricked New York City's Party People", the nine-episode series is nine episodes long.

Insider has reported that Garner previously stated that she visited Sorokin in prison with Shonda Rhimes, show creator and producer. Sorokin stated that she had received visitors about the show and that she also provided research materials for the series. Sorokin stated that she is "an afterthought" despite her involvement.

She wrote that the show was based on her story, and it took nearly four years to make and many hours of phone calls and visits. "And while it's fascinating to see how they interpret all the research and material provided, I can't help feeling like an afterthought. The somber irony that I was confined to another horrible correctional facility, lost between the lines, the past repeating itself, is something I am curious about."

A jury found Sorokin guilty in April 2019 of grand larceny. Prosecutors claimed she conned business and friends out of money by pretending she was the daughter a German oil baron who had a $67million inheritance. One case involved her sticking a friend with $62,000 bills for a trip in Morocco. Another case was when she got $100,000 from a bank that she never repaid.

Sorokin was sentenced for four to twelve years imprisonment, which includes the two years she spent in prison before her trial. On good behaviour, she was released in February 2021.

After Netflix paid Sorokin $320,000 to license her story, she gave $200,000 to restitution, attorney fees , and fines for Insider.

Six weeks later, Sorokin was again detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She had overstayed her visa. As she is facing possible deportation to Germany, she remains in ICE custody.

"Inventing Anne" will premiere on Netflix on February 11.
