Chad Doerman cried in court when the prosecutor said that he had "lined up", "executed", the boys, in an "unspeakable" act; another child found in the street was saying "her dad was killing everyone."
In a courtroom on Friday, the bond for a man who was accused -- and allegedly confessed to -- killing three of his children has been set at $20,000,000.
Chad Doerman, of Monroe Township in Ohio, was arrested Thursday, June 15, after police responded to two 911 calls made to his residence. Clermont County Sheriff's Office reports that one of the 911 calls was made by a woman yelling "her babies were shot." The second call was from a motorist who reported a girl running down the road screaming "her dad was killing everyone."
Deputies and EMS found three boys, Doerman’s sons aged 3, 4, and 7, unresponsive. The three boys died from gunshot injuries on the spot. While being treated at the hospital for her hand wound, the mother of the children was also shot. She learned that the boys had died while there.
Doerman is charged with three counts aggravated murder.
Doerman was in court on Friday for a hearing to determine his bond. The attorney for Doerman asked for a $75,000 bond. However, the Clermont County Prosecutor's Office wanted $20 million - reportedly the largest bond in the county's history.
David Gast, the chief of the criminal division, revealed more details during the hearing. He said that Doerman admitted his guilt in full.
He told the judge that the trauma this man had caused his family, community, first responders, and law enforcement was "unspeakable", before telling him what happened the day prior.
"In a cruel act that is beyond comprehension, the father in front of you lined up three boys in his home and shot them with a rifle. Gast said that the boys were aged 3, 4, and 7. In a desperate attempt to protect her children, she grabbed at one point the gun that the father was holding.
He claimed that one of the boys "was able" to "flee" into a nearby farm, but according to Doerman, "the child's dad hunted down this boy, dragged him back to the land and executed him before witnesses." Gast claimed that the mother of the three boys was shot in an attempt to protect them.
Gast said, "By his admission, he committed one of most monstrous acts, cowardly and craven that we will ever have the misfortune of seeing," Gast said, adding that Doerman had admitted to "planning the events of today" for a while. Detectives stated in a criminal complaint that the suspect admitted to planning it "several" months before.
This did not happen at random. "He confessed what I think is the worst crime - at least, I hope - I will ever see in my life," Gast said as Doerman was seen crying and tearing up behind him.
Gast said that it was traumatic to respond to such a scene, and that first responders had "held these boys" in their arms while knowing they couldn't save them. He said that in addition to Doerman’s confession, the details were confirmed by witnesses who witnessed at least "part" of what occurred.
He said the bond was set so high because the state, in addition to being concerned about the seriousness of the crime committed, believed that he would flee and could not "name anyone who would pose a greater danger to the community if he were released." Gast said "this case will hopefully be unlike any other that we have ever seen" and that he would ask that Doerman not be released on bond when he takes the case to a grand juror.
The judge granted the request for $20 million and scheduled a preliminary hearing on June 26.
