Father-Son Duo Claim They Unknowingly Picked Up Hitchhiker Wanted for Murder

The driver claimed he did not realize that he had driven the murder suspect, until a friend told him: "A guy from Rabun County killed someone last night and still has their head."

It sounds like an urban legend.

A man and his son were driving in Georgia earlier this week, when they decided pick up a stranger. They say the hitchhiker was a murder suspect who may have been carrying the severed head of the victim on him.

According the Georgia Bureau of Investigation the terrifying saga started Sunday, August 6 when the GBI received a request from the Rabun County Sheriff's Office for assistance in a murder case. The Sheriff's Office already had information that someone killed a person and then disposed of the body. Deputies discovered it on Monday, in the Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest.

Local and state officials had announced on Tuesday that they were searching for Keegan Philips, 23 in connection with this murder. He was described with brown hair, blue eyes and as "dishevelled and dirty."

Russell Jimmerson had clearly not heard of any of this, and did not hesitate to pick up a stranger by the side of the highway that day. "He stuck his hand out very quickly. I told my son, 'Let's get him.' Jimmerson said to WXIA that he helps everyone. "He had been walking all night from Rabun County."

He noticed that the man was wearing a backpack, and remembered a strong smell coming from him. Jimmerson claimed to have dropped off the man, and that he later learned the man they had given a ride was the subject of an investigation in a murder.

His friend said, "You'll never believe what happened." "A man in Rabun County killed someone last night, and has the head. "Man, you'll never believe what I am about to tell you." I replied. This car has a terrible smell.

"My friend said, 'Is it a joke? Did you pick up a hitchhiker?" Jimmerson said that he had said "No, I did not" and that he was adamant about it.

Authorities have not yet revealed additional details, such as whether the head was severed, which Jimmerson’s friend had suggested. The authorities have also not confirmed if the man Jimmerson was picking up was Phillipps. Phillipps was arrested and charged with murder later that day.

Robert Lee Peppers, 62 ( at left ) was arrested and charged for concealing a death as well as unlawful disposal of the body. GBI states that the investigation continues.

The Rabun County Sheriff's Office believe the victim to be Angela Ledford who was previously reported as missing -- although they are still waiting for the GBI Crime Lab to positively identify the remains.
