She demanded that screening and hiring policies be established "so that delivery uniform-wearing monsters don't appear on our doorsteps."
New details concerning the death of Athena Strand, 7 years old, have been released. These include the FedEx driver who is accused of killing Strand and what he delivered to Strand's home.
Maitlyn Gandy, Athena’s mother, gave a sad press conference in Texas on Thursday. She shared with reporters that Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, was driving onto Athena’s property to deliver a package which was supposed to be a Christmas present to her daughter.
As she spoke, the box of Barbies "You Can Be Anything", which he allegedly gave her, was standing beside her. Gandy claimed that she was just seeing it for the first time.
She got emotional throughout her speech, saying that Athena was denied the chance to be whatever she wanted and that this present she received out of love and innocence was one she would never receive. "Christmas was Athena's favorite holiday... it brought her joy and her family joy. We will never be able to feel that joy with her again."
"I will never be able to see her bright blue eyes. "I will never hear her say, Mommy, I love you." She continued, "I will never be able again to wash her hair or hold her while her sleeps." "I was robbed by a man I was supposed to trust to deliver a Christmas gift and leave.
Gandy asked everyone to "hold your littles just slightly tighter for me" and promised to dedicate her life to her daughter. Gandy also demanded that "screening and hiring policy" be established "so that delivery-masked monsters don't appear on our children's doors."
Philadelphia's 'Boy in a Box' finally identified 65 years after he was found murdered to death
Athena disappeared last Wednesday, November 30. A massive search was launched to locate her. Although her body was found on Friday evening, authorities believe that she was abducted within one hour. Horner, 31 years old, was also arrested Friday and charged with capital murder as well as aggravated kidnapping.
Law&Crime obtained an arrest affidavit on Thursday that revealed new details regarding the alleged murder of the child.
Warning! The following information is disturbing.
According to the documents, authorities discovered that a FedEx delivery had been made at the same time As Athena disappeared. The FBI was able view video from the van that delivered Athena's father's house after tracking down FedEx's contractor. According to the video, it contained footage of a young girl in the vehicle talking with the driver. Horner was later identified.
Horner, allegedly, confessed to taking Athena. He told investigators that he "accidentally hit Athena with his FedEx truck while backing up" and was not seriously hurt. According to Horner, he claimed he panicked and placed Athena in the van. He also said that she had told him her name. Horner claimed Horner tried to break her neck and then strangled her in the van with his naked hands. Horner claims that Horner did this because she was about to tell her father what happened to her when he drove the FedEx truck. Horner is believed to then have directed authorities to her body.
He is currently held on a $1.5 million bond.
USA Today reports that the family is investigating "who might be responsible for the decisions which led to Athena's abduction and murder, including FedEx." FedEx stated last week that it was shocked and saddened by the news reports about this tragic incident. We are thinking of the family at this difficult time and will continue to cooperate with the authorities.
