Florida Mother Dead After Gas Can 'Exploded in Her Hands', Injured 11-Year-Old Son

Florida Mother Dead After Gas Can 'Exploded in Her Hands', Injured 11-Year-Old Son

The widower of the woman said, "Just be cautious, because it is a life-changer. It can rip your entire world apart in a blink of an eye."

After a Florida fire pit accident, a mother of five was killed and her son, 11, was taken to the hospital.

Nicole Foltz (38), Tarpon Springs, was enjoying her backyard with family members and friends on November 14. A fire was lit to repel the insects. Jeff, her husband, went in and Nicole decided to put another log on the fire to keep it going. He said that Nicole felt the need to put some gas on the fire, so he added FOX 13 that if there wasn't enough flame, she would pour more gas. It did. It must have traveled the gas stream to the gas can and exploded in her hands.

Jeff shared with WFTS that she was shocked when the can burst. She ran, panicked, and then stopped to drop and roll like you're supposed to. Jeff said that she suffered nearly 100% burns to her body. The only thing that was not burnt was one patch of hair.

Three days later, she died in the hospital. Jeffrey, the 11-year old son of the couple, was also severely burned during the incident.

Jeff shared that he was there at his bedside 24 hours per day. He slept in the chair right beside me, and didn't move. "I was as strong as possible for him, for her, and for the rest our family."

Jeff shared a photo on Facebook of himself and the boy who was being bandaged in the hospital ( above right), and captioned the photo with "We are on a path of healing and recovery in so many different ways." Although I am a man who can speak many words, I am left speechless by my grief. You are truly loved and missed in so many ways. I am grateful to everyone for their support and love, which sometimes seems overwhelming. We love you all!

After 12 days in hospital, the child was released with second- and third-degree burns. A GoFundMe page for the family has raised over $28,000. The page states that all donations will be used to pay for Nicole's funeral, her hospital bills, young Jeffreys ongoing and existing hospital bills for skin graphs, long-term rehabilitation, childcare and other living expenses for the six remaining family members who are currently without Nicole's income.

Nicole's husband hopes that her passing will make others think twice about using gasoline on future fires.

He said, "It's certainly not safe, but everybody's done it. Everyone does it." It can change your life in a flash.

He said, "It's just a senseless act you don't expect will happen in your family." Gasoline is no joke when it comes fire. It's important to take care or you might not be able to do it.

Jeff said, "I don’t want to hear about someone else’s family going through this." "It's unimaginable."
