What woman wants to hear her man say: Hey, sweetheart! Smile! When I said it, Tom Bergeron remembered, "Oh, you idiot ],'".

Former Dancing with the Starshost Tom Bergeron has learned the hard lesson that it's never a good idea to tell a female to "smile".

As DWTSfans will recall, in Season 24 of 2017, Bergeron made a cruel comment to gymnast Simone Biles who was visibly unhappy after the judges criticised her and partner Sasha Farber’s Paso Doble.

Bergeron responded to the Olympic Gold Medalist's facial expression by saying, "I waited for you to smile when I gave some compliments. You didn't." Biles replied, "Smiling won't get you gold medals."

Bergeron reflected back on that infamous moment while appearing on DWTS alum Cheryl Burke’s Sex, Lies and Spray Tans Podcast earlier this week. He admitted it was "one of the rare times I spoke before thinking" during his 15-year tenure as host for the reality competition show.

The TV personality pointed out that Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and other judges were "harsh" at the time but Carrie Ann Inaba "was very complimentary" to Biles. Bergeron said that a producer had told him through his earpiece: "Wow, Carrie Ann isn't even smiling when she compliments her."

Instead of saying "Simone, how do you feel about the comments made by the judges? Carrie Ann's comments were complimentary, while the others were not. Bergeron explained that instead of saying this, I thought about the last thing [the producer] said and went, "I noticed you did not smile." What woman wants to hear her man say, "Hey, sweetheart! Smile!" When I said it, I thought 'Oh you idiot ].'"

Bergeron thanked Biles for calling out his comments.

"I was properly put in my position," he said before revealing that Biles had created tee-shirts with her famous response.

The host of the game show added that he had suggested they take a picture together, with Biles wearing Biles' shirt.

Bergeron remembered: "I stood beside her, looking very sheepish as she wore this wonderful shirt. We put it on social media. "But this was the one time I wished that I had translated what I heard with my ears and put it into my own words."

Biles placed fourth on Dancing with the Stars. Bergeron was the host of Dancing with the Stars from 2005 until he left in 2019.
