Jeremey Clarkson made a career of sticking his foot in his mouth. The bombastic car enthusiast pulled his size 11 from the ground again this weekend.
The controversial host of Grand Tour was criticized for making a reference to Game Of Thrones in a column for The Sun. He also attacked Meghan Markle. Clarkson was the target of a lot of criticism on social media. He made an uncommon apology.
Clarkson was fired from BBC's Top Gear for belittling a crew member. He has been an auto columnist for The Sun for many years and other newspapers in the United Kingdom.
He has occasionally written opinion columns about other topics. Many of these don't get a lot of attention from the public. He recently wrote a review about Netflix's latest docu-series, Harry & Meghan. It's not an exception. He doesn't like Markle to the delight of no one and took the opportunity for a slap on her.
Clarkson wrote that he hated Meghan on a cell level in his column. This sentence was only the beginning of Clarkson's rant. The next paragraph shocked and angered readers.
"At night I can't sleep as I lie there grinding my teeth, dreaming of the day when she will be paraded naked through the streets in every British town, while the crowds chant, "Shame!" and throw excrement at me."
It is easy to understand why people get so upset. Clarkson conjures up a horrible image straight from twisted misogynist fantasies. It's a form of punishment for a Middle Ages morality that we have forgotten centuries ago.
It's also a reference the famous scene in Game Of Thrones, in which Cersei Lannister must walk naked through King's Landing, while Septa Unella follows her, ringing bells and chanting "shame".
The shocking scene was widely criticized at the time, but it was intended to evoke fear and terror in viewers.
RELATED A poll claims people 'didn't tune in' for 'Harry & Meghan’ Documentary. But that doesn't seem to be true
We are now bringing up the triggers again, but this time it is in reference to Meghan Markle, a real person, and not a fictional TV star. Clarkson may have intended it as a joke but it isn't something we should laugh at.
After being wrongfully accused, Clarkson took to Twitter and apologized. Although his apology was sincere, many people don't believe it went far enough.
Although he admitted to making a mistake and said he was sorry, Game Of Thrones is not his fault.
Many felt that his apology was not sufficient without it. One person replied, "[Clarkson’s comments are] beyond what is acceptable and this isn’t sufficient as an ‘apology’." Others called him a "terrible individual" and said that his tweet "didn’t cut it" to say he was sorry.
His daughter called him out and said: "I want it to be very clear that my dad wrote negative things about Meghan Markle."
It seems that the hurtful trope "woman-as-shrew" isn't going anywhere soon. This is a shame. Referring to a TV series that is just as well-known for its violence against women than it is for its CGI Dragons is a terrible way to treat Markle and anyone else.
