From Aubrey Plaza to Ben Affleck to Winona Ryder: When a Single Face Expression Says It All on Awards Night

Memes can immortalize a celebrity's facial expressions, whether it is at the Grammys, the Golden Globes or the Oscars.

Although awards shows may present personal and professional triumphs and losses to attendees, the memorable moments are still broadcast to millions around the globe.

Celebrities can instantly turn a simple facial expression into a meme. They're the talk of Twitter before the show ends. The expressions can have a universal appeal that can be used in meme format to fit many contexts, giving them a life beyond the awards show.

Continue reading to discover some of the most memorable awards moments from the past...

1. Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza's season on "White Lotus" won the award for Best Ensemble of Drama Series at the 2023 SAG Awards. But she wasn't too happy when she was on stage. Jon Gries, Aubrey Plaza's co-star on "White Lotus," could be seen whispering in her ear as she accepted the award. Her facial expressions were so funny that it got the internet talking.

Jon pointed out the straps of her bodice-baring gown, believing she was in danger of a wardrobe malfunction. He didn't know the dress was meant to show his underboob. Jon reached out to her later and she assured him that all was well and she wasn’t upset.

He told Page Six that he believed she was intimating: "Why would that be a problem? If my nipple shows," he said.

Aubrey's other expressions and utterances are explained by Gries as to Aubrey's brand and personality. "That's her humor; she has that dry, deadpan wit; that is her biting wit," Gries said.

2. Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck was at his wife's side during the 2023 Grammys, but he wasn't thrilled to be there. Fans noticed that he was always looking bored or grimaced when the camera pans to him during the show. He was a popular meme by half-way through the show. A nearby seat filler said that JLo was showing him photos during the event. Even though he knew the internet was talking to him, Ben didn’t seem too bothered. His grumpy expressions remained the same throughout the night.

3. Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder's facial expressions at 2017 SAG Awards were a big deal after "Stranger Things," which won the award for Best Ensemble Drama Series Cast, made headlines. She looked shocked, confused, and stunned as she took to the stage. She was even more shocked when David Harbour, her co-star read his politically charged acceptance speech. David says that her emotional journey on stage was all because she couldn’t hear him.

"She couldn’t hear me!" People later heard David's story. "Which I was confused about, because I was screaming!" She apparently couldn't hear me."

4. Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen couldn't contain her joy when John Legend, Chrissy's husband, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song 2015! The meme of her crying face and grimacing instantly became a viral sensation, even after years.

"Sorry, I don't practice my crying face okay. She tweeted that it had been five minutes since she was a meme.

5. Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is well-known for her expressive gestures at the award shows. She usually cradles her hands around her face and shouts a support message. This all started at the 2015 SAG Awards where she was seen cheering for Debbie Reynolds. She recreated that moment at the 2018 Oscars.

6. Don Cheadle

Celebrities signed up to Zoom to receive their Golden Globes awards when they were held virtually in 2021. After winning Best Actor, TV Series, Musical, or Comedy, Jason Sudeikis gave his speech. Don Cheadle was not impressed. He was also on Zoom and was seen making a gesture to Jason to end the show. But it was all good fun.

Jason said later, "Hey! That's just Kansas City Love." "If anyone was going tell me...He knew that I would listen to him. That's it. Many people don't realize that he is an American actor icon and a great stage manager. You know the guy has chops.

7. Jennifer Aniston

Every interaction Jennifer Aniston had with Brad Pitt is viral. The 2020 SAG Awards was no exception. Jennifer proudly clapped from the crowd when Brad accepted the award as Male Actor in Supporting Role. Brad cracked a joke during his speech about his ex-wife, while talking about his role as Cliff Booth in the movie "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

Let's be real. It was difficult. He laughed and said, "A guy who gets up high, takes off his shirt, and doesn't get along with his wife."

8. Jennifer Garner

The camera panted to Jennifer Garner, who was clapping in the crowd during the 2018 Oscars. Just seconds after she had received her applause, Jennifer Garner suddenly looked horrified. Jennifer joked later about the meme she made from this moment.

9. Blue Ivy

Jay-Z's and Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy were the stars of the 2018 Grammys. Her hilarious reaction to her parents was a highlight. Blue thought that they were too loud and started clapping in front of the audience. She raised her hand to signal her parents to stop applauding.

10. Jay-Z

Jay-Z also had a hilariously awkward moment at Grammys, just like his daughter. Jay and Bey arrived fashionably late at the ceremony in 2023 and missed Beyonce's Grammy. As the couple settled in their seats, Trevor Noah, the host, rushed over to present the award to Jay-Z. Jay-Z was trying desperately to give Bey a drink. Jay was clearly confused by what was going on and looked somewhat offended when Bey refused to give him a drink.

11. Jason Sudeikis

Jason Sudeikis appeared on Zoom during the 2021 virtual Golden Globes, when Norman Lear accepted his Carol Burnett Award. Jason was visibly shocked when Norman spoke and said he was "close enough to 99". Jason can be heard saying, "He's 99?" Wow!" While viewers at home watched, they probably thought the exact same thing!

12. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga had a little bit of an improbable encounter at the 2016 Golden Globes. As she approached the stage, she passed Leo's seat. He ended up looking quite offended that she had bumped into his. He was just surprised that Gaga had passed him, and there were no hard feelings.

"Oh my God, that's trendy! Entertainment Tonight spoke to Leo shortly after the show. "I didn't know what was going on, that's all," Leo said to Entertainment Tonight shortly after the show.
