Genius hack to easily sew straight lines, plus other handy sewing tricks

a hand sewing a straight line with hack

At the age 12 my sewing career was over when I was asked by my mom to cut a simple dress pattern. It turned out to be a crime scene and it was that day that I lost all my skills. This was when I realized that I have no talent in cutting straight lines of fabric.

I didn't revisit sewing until after the pandemic, when I was trying to find a new hobby and learning new skills. I was pleased to discover that my ability to accurately cut a pattern had improved. I was also able to access the most useful sewing tricks and hacks on the internet.

How to Sew Straight Lines

Reddit has a great hack that allows you to sew straight lines. Wow, this is amazing! I wish I had found it months ago.

Reddit user shared a photo showing a hand sewing tip titled "How do you sew straight lines?"

The image showed the two lines drawn on the thumbnail of the sewer, while the thumb and pointer fingers held up a hemstitch that was in progress. The thumb's position meant that the lines were a guideline for the stitch. It's amazing!

How to sew straight lines. Lifehacks

This is a real life hack. "Very helpful!" commented one person. One person commented, "Very helpful!" Another said, "Whoever thought of that is a genius!"

Sewing puns began to flood the comments. The comments were filled with sewing puns, ranging from "It's obvious" to "it really seems effective." Another commenter pointed out that the hack was a good rule of thumb.

How to Thread a Needle: It's Easy

There's an easy trick to help you thread those tiny holes with your machine or by hand sewing. Spray the thread's tip with hairspray to make it stiffer. It will then slip easily through the needle's eye. It will be easy to push it through the needle without fraying.

Do You Need a Hand?

Sometimes you need to use more than one hand when sewing heavy fabrics such as leather or denim. Binder clips can be used to hold the larger, bulkier fabrics together. This is an affordable option, and you probably have a lot of them in your junk drawer. You can also grab some binder clips here in case you don’t have any.

Double-check those stitches

You can draw two lines around your thumb, just like the Reddit post. This will ensure that your stitches are even. Measure how far apart your stitches should be and mark it with a Sharpie or your pointer finger. This will allow you to measure while you sew.
