People are compiling lists of the things that have defined the past 365 calendar days as we approach the end of 2022. Every year, Oxford lexicographers select a word of year. 2022's word is "goblin mode."

"Goblin Mode" Was The First Word To Be Chosen Publicly In The Year

Oxford University Press is just one of many organizations that selects the word of the year. The word selection team is composed of lexicographers and consultants as well as editorial, marketing and publicity staff.

The public also helped the team this year. 2022 is the first year that the Oxford word of year was selected by the public.

Three words were possible choices, but "goblin" was the winner with 93% (318,00056 votes). With 14,484 votes, "metaverse", with 8,639 votes, was the runner-up.

What does 'Goblin Mode" mean?

What does "goblin mode" actually mean? According to Oxford University Press, "goblin mode" refers to "a type behavior that is unapologetically self indulgent, lazy, slovenly or greedy, often in a manner that rejects social norms and expectations."

It is a slang term that has gained popularity online. People often use it to express their feelings such as "I'm going in goblin mode" and "I'm in goblin mode".

Although the phrase was first used in 2009, it didn't make it into the internet's lexicon until 2012 when a fake headline that claimed Julia Fox was in "goblin mode", went viral.

Oxford Languages President Says That The Phrase "Resonates" With Anyone Feeling "A Little Overwhelmed"

Casper Grathwohl (president of Oxford Languages) spoke about his excitement at the public's interest in being a part the word-of-the year selection process. He said it "totally took us by surprise."

"The strength and variety of the responses highlights how important our vocabulary are to understanding who we really are and processing the world around us," Grathwohl shared in the BBC.

"Given what we've just been through, "goblin mode" resonates with those of us feeling overwhelmed. It's refreshing to realize that we are not always the perfect, polished selves we want to be on Instagram and TikTok.

Although many people may have been shocked to learn that Oxford named "goblin mode" the word of 2012, the phrase has become a popular online term to describe moments when you are at your worst.
