In March 2022, the model had a mini-stroke (known as a transient ischemic stroke (TIA).) Doctors discovered a tiny hole in her heart. This was known as Patent Foramen Ovale, or PFO.

Hailey Bieber takes a look back on a "life-changing" event.

The model posted to Instagram Stories Friday to tell her followers that one year has passed since her mini-stroke. Doctors discovered a small hole inside her heart. This is known as Patent Foramen Ovale, or PFO.

Bieber wrote, "Can't believe that it's been one-year since I suffered a ministroke that led me to my PFO diagnosis," and reshared a April 2022 video in which she opened up about her health scare.

She said, "Given it's the one year mark from such an life-changing experience, I wanted to share everything I know about PFO and to share resources to help donate."

26-year old shared two infographics on her Instagram Stories, providing statistics and useful resources about PFO at UCLA Health.

Bieber stated that PFO was "the most common congenital cardiac defect" and affects 20% of all people. It is also common in 1st-degree relatives, with 60% of cases. She said that 60% of stroke victims "without a known cause", are "likely to have a patentforamen ovale."

Rhode founder shared with us that PFO is a "passage way between the left atria and the heart" and that it "exists in all people before birth." It closes for most people after they are born but it doesn't close for "around one-fourth of people." Bieber explained that PFO is the "passage way" when the flap does not close. Bieber also shared a link to help those who wish to donate to UCLA’s PFO Closure Research Fund.

Bieber also posted a Story on her Stories. She gave credit to Emila Clarke's charity Same You, which raises funds for stroke victims and brain injuries. Two life-threatening brain aneurysms that threatened her life in 2011 and 2013 were dealt with by the Game of Thrones alum.

Bieber shared a link to a YouTube clip posted by the charity on her Instagram Stories.

The "Lip Sync battle" host suffered a mini-stroke in March 2022. This is known as a transient ischemic stroke (TIA). She was hospitalized following her PFO diagnosis. A device was then inserted to permanently close her heart.

Bieber spoke out about the trauma that affected her mental health earlier this year.

She spoke out on a January episode of "Run-Through with Vogue," revealing that she had experienced anxiety and PTSD since her mini-stroke.

Bieber stated that it was difficult. I experienced a lot anxiety. A little bit of PTSD was a result of the fear that it might happen again. It was a feeling I had that I would never experience it again. It was terrifying, jarring, and discombobulating in every way you can imagine.

She said that the health scare was unexpected after she reflected on it. When you are young and in your twenties, you think you're healthy. You do everything to keep yourself healthy.

Bieber said that all the doctors believed it was a perfect storm. There were a few factors that caused you to have a small bloodclot. The blood clot traveled from my heart to my brain through the hole, which is what they call a mini stroke.

She said, "It was definitely one of the scariest things I've ever experienced."
